Welcome to Heading Home K9 Rescue!

Did you see a dog that caught your eye? Ready to start the adoption process? Happy to help! Feel free to email the dog's listed contact with any questions you have...the dogs live in our homes with us so we know them very well. Please also download and fill out the preadopt application (Heading Home K9 Rescue Preadopt Application) and email it in to the listed contact for the dog(s) you are interested in. We read through the application, check references, and once approved (we aim for 24-48 hours to approve or deny), we set up a visit with you and the foster home or direct you to an adoption event to meet the dog(s). Fosters are more than happy to answer questions that arise. We all want a good match the first time, and a successful experience for the adopter and the dog.
After meeting, you can choose to outright adopt, or do a foster to adopt, where you complete an extra form and gain a 1-2 week period to see how the dog adjusts, and if the fit between the dog and your home is right. We encourage adopters to give it a MINIMUM of 3 days. Returning a dog before that period means it never had a chance to settle in and show you what the true personality is like. Moving dogs between homes is stressful and not in the dog's best interests. We are here to support you after adoption also, answering questions and helping make the process as positive as we can. We highly recommend you read the tips in this packet (Adopting 101) before bringing your new dog home...it will help greatly ease the transition and make it a positive experience for everyone!

Our adoption fees are non-negotiable and average about $350 which includes their vet work-spay/neuter, vaccinations, heartworm testing (if old enough), and deworming. Often the vet costs far exceed the adoption fee, especially on our special needs dogs. We rely on adoption fees to be able to continue to rescue more dogs in need.

NEXT PET ADOPTION-- Our next pet adoption will be on Sunday May 28th from 12-2 at the Edina Chuck and Dons

REMINDER: It is always a good idea to email the contact listed in each dog's bio to find out of s/he will be attending an adoption event before making the drive. Many dogs do not attend the adoption events.

HEADING HOME DOGS LOOKING FOR HOMES:

Name: Ashley
Breed: Lab/ Pit Bull Cross
Age: Young Adult
Gender: Female
Description: Ashley is a young adult female Lab/Pit Bull? mix, a gentle soul who is happiest when she is snuggling her people or playing outside with a dog friend. Fostered with dogs of multiple sizes, she gets along with everyone-- big dogs, small dogs, and has a healthy respect for cats as well. She is lovely with children, her gentle sweetness shines through. She can be a little shy at first but her curiousity and desire to make friends means it doesn't last long. She is house trained, crate trained, and would be thrilled to find a home with a fenced yard and another dog-- playtime with a canine companion is when she's happiest, followed second by snuggle time on the couch.

Requirements: Adopter must own home due to breed mix. Fenced yard.

You can email kladams4545@gmail.com with questions and for a preadopt application. This dog has been spayed/neutered, vaccinated as age appropriate, tested for heartworm disease if age appropriate, and dewormed.

Name: Bane`
Breed: Akita
Age: Adult
Gender: Male
Description: Bane is a stunning Akita who defines the Akita breed…loyal, watchful, a dash of a stubborn streak, and incredibly beautiful. Bane’s tough dog exterior (and his big bark!) hides a soft soul who loves his people beyond measure. Once he bonds, you have a best friend for life. Bane is housetrained on a schedule, crates for the workday (though hates the crate and it’s a bit of a fight to get him in there), and minds his manners well in the house. He is a barker when appropriate so is not suitable to a home with shared walls (apartment, townhome, etc). Bane is an active dog who loves his walks and playtime but settles nicely once he is tired out. He is not good with cats or small animals. He is tolerant of other dogs though would be best in a home as an only dog or with a submissive, female who will respect his space. Like most Akitas, Bane has a stubborn, dominant streak and needs an experienced handler who will firmly, yet lovingly set the rules and boundaries for him. He toes the line perfectly once he knows what is expected of him but he needs a handler who can control a powerful, intelligent dog. Please do your research on this breed before considering adopting Bane, Akitas are fabulous companions in the right home but they are not the dog for everyone. Bane is a beautiful representation of his breed in both looks and temperament.

Requirements: No cats. Experienced Home Required.

You can email laurahhk9@gmail.com with questions and for a preadopt application. This dog has been spayed/neutered, vaccinated as age appropriate, tested for heartworm disease if age appropriate, and dewormed.

Name: Bella (Adoption Pending!)
Breed: Retriever Cross
Age: Adult
Gender: Female
Description: Bella is an adult female possible Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever ( or possibly just Retriever) mix who came to us from a shelter and is seeking a new home. Sweet Bella is reliably house trained, not been a chewer, and kennels quietly when asked. She is very well behaved in the house. Bella likes car rides, long walks, and being reassured with pets. We suspect some vision impairment mildly, one eye looks to have an old injury, and she startles if approached suddenly... once you speak to her she is all wags and sweetness. Bella is probably 7-8 years old and 45 pounds. She likes kids but their quick movements can startle her, so while she shows no aggression we think an adult home is ideal, and one with yard space for her. Bella is slightly timid at first but quick to warm up with someone who is quiet and patient and gives her a few minutes. She is a very well mannered and loving dog.

Requirements: Quieter Adult home with yard space.

You can email kladams4545@gmail.com with questions and for a preadopt application. This dog has been spayed/neutered, vaccinated as age appropriate, tested for heartworm disease if age appropriate, and dewormed.

Name: Betsy
Breed: Shepherd Cross
Age: Adult
Gender: Female
Description: Betsy is a middle aged female Shepherd mix who has had a hard life. She's gentle, quiet, very polite and well trained in the house. She likes the cat and the small old dog, but the young rowdy big dog who wants to play makes her crazy. She's tolerant of kids but doesn't especially enjoy their attention, she prefers adult women. Betsy is well behaved but quirky, and we are seeking a quiet home with smaller mellower animals and no young kids that she can hang out in.

Requirements: Quieter, Adult home

You can email kladams4545@gmail.com with questions and for a preadopt application. This dog has been spayed/neutered, vaccinated as age appropriate, tested for heartworm disease if age appropriate, and dewormed.

Name: Blitz
Breed: German Shepherd
Age: Adult
Gender: Male
Description: Blitz is a handsome German Shepherd boy with a love of playing with toys.  He is happiest with a ball in his mouth and some space to run around and burn his energy off. Blitz found his way into a local impound the result of lack of training and an open fence gate causing him to chase and bite a child in play. Shepherds are herding breeds after all and he was doing what he thought was all in good fun! He needs a home with no kids due to his size, lack of training, and previous bite. Blitz is housetrained, crates well, minds his manners well in the house, and is working on learning his basic commands. He is a very smart boy and it shows in how quickly he picks things up...he learned he needed to drop the tennis ball and sit for it to be thrown again in about 10 minutes. His last owner loved him and cared for him well but skipped the training and shepherds need both love and training to be successful, well-mannered companions. He would do best in a home with shepherd experience, time to train, and the ability to manage his wild side with training and exercise. He does require a physically fenced yard or a home outside the city with acreage he can be trained to stay on.  He is not good with cats and would be best placed as an only dog.

Requirements: Experienced Home Required. No cats. Physically fenced yard or acreage

You can email laurahhk9@gmail.com with questions and for a preadopt application. This dog has been spayed/neutered, vaccinated as age appropriate, tested for heartworm disease if age appropriate, and dewormed.

Name: Bosco
Breed: German Shepherd/ Rottweiler Cross
Age: Adult
Gender: Male
Description: Bosco is a big, handsome 3-4 year old Rottie/Shepherd mix who is loyal, loving, and quite the goofball. He is happiest following his person around for hours on end, finding some funny mischief to get into, and always is ready for a scratch and some love. Bosco came into rescue with serious hip issues that made it difficult for him to lead a normal life. We expected him to need surgery but as it turned out his issues are too severe even for surgery to correct. He has little to no muscle in his back legs making surgery a poor choice.  Bosco is on lifelong pain management, joint supplements, and injections of Adequan (synthetic joint medication). Now this sounds like a pretty poor quality of life, nope, not for Bosco! He is so happy to be pain free for the first time in a long time that he plays like a puppy, he runs, he fetches, he counter surfs (naughty boy!), and is overjoyed for every minute he gets to spend having fun. We don't know what his life holds long term. He might eventually be a surgery candidate, he might not. He might live a shorter life due to the severity of his injuries or he might live a normal lifespan. We simply cannot predict so he needs an adopter who is willing to commit to whatever his life brings and willing and able to emotionally and financially commit to continuing to manage his pain and hips so he can live pain-free. Bosco is excellent with other dogs, adores people of all ages, and has never met a stranger, only new best friends. He does need a cat-free home. He is housetrained, crates well for the workday, loves to chew on bones and toys. (Photo courtesy of Ciao Bella Photography)

Requirements: Medical special needs. No cats

You can email laurahhk9@gmail.com with questions and for a preadopt application. This dog has been spayed/neutered, vaccinated as age appropriate, tested for heartworm disease if age appropriate, and dewormed.

Name: Bounce
Breed: Pit Bull Cross
Age: Adult
Gender: Female
Description: Bounce is a happy, social, loving 3 year old Pittie girl. She found herself at a local impound after she was let unsupervised with a toddler and the toddler sustained a nip/scratch. Bounce was blamed, and she was no longer wanted. Bounce is ready to put the past behind her and is facing her future with her typical happy-go-lucky attitude! She loves other dogs and is fine with cats. She is extremely friendly, loves people, is a champion snuggler, and loves her walks and playtime but equally loves her couch time. She is housetrained (though please expect accidents as she transitions), crates for the workday, and minds her manners as well as any young dog can. Because of the unknown circumstances of the nip on the small child, we are seeking an older child (8+) or adult home for her just as a precaution though we have seen her be absolutely nothing but a complete love. If you are looking for a snuggly, adorable companion to share your home, your couch, and your adventures, please consider Bounce. She will bring so much happiness to your life.

Requirements: Adopter must own home due to breed mix. Kids ages 8+

Name: Cato
Breed: Shepherd/ Rottie/ Terrier Cross
Age: Young Adult
Gender: Male
Description: Cato is a 40 lb, 2 year old mixed up three-legged mutt who will look like a puppy forever.  He is determined as well to never leave his puppy joy behind either!  This sweet boy can find fun in anything.  He loves playing with other dogs, loves toys, loves to go out and about meeting people, and then happily collapses for a nap on a dog bed once his energy is out.  He is housetrained on a schedule and minds his manners well in the house (though occasional things still fall victim to being chewed!).  Cato's biggest hurdle for finding a home and what has kept him in rescue for over a year is his separation anxiety.  He needs an extra sturdy, reinforced crate to contain him when his people leave as well as a home experienced (or willing to learn!) in managing and working with separation anxiety behaviors.  Cato loves his walks and playtime, missing a leg doesn't slow him down in the slightest, and would love an active person/family to pick him as theirs.  (Photo courtesy of Ciao Bella Photography)

Requirements: Home committed to training and working with the separation anxiety.

Name: Daisy
Breed: Dalmatian Cross
Age: Young Adult
Gender: Female
Description: Daisy is a young adult female Dalmation mix, looks to be Dalmation/Pointer, and she is a sweetheart. She's good with kids, dog and ignored the office cat in favor of more pets being doled out. She can be a little shy at first but always soft and sweet. Daisy is a people pleaser and works hard to watch you and predict what you want from her. She is a very nice dog who works hard to make you happy.

Requirements: Home with yard space

Name: Daisy Mae (Adoption Pending!)
Breed: Shepherd/ Lab Cross
Age: Young Adult
Gender: Female
Description: Brownie and Daisy Mae are 10 month old, 40 pound Shepherd/Lab type mixed breeds who came in as strays, and someone lost some treasures. Social, well adjusted, sweet girls, they appear to have had a little training before and are quickly adapting to being in a house again. House training is going well and they are crated for the workday. Brownie and Daisy Mae are good with dogs and kids. They do NOT have to be adopted together but would love a home with another dog for companionship.

Requirements: No special requirements

Name: Dewey
Breed: Pit Bull
Age: Young Adult
Gender: Male
Description: You know those bad Pit Bull stereotypes you have heard? Well, Dewey here puts every one of them to shame with his exceptional personality and sweetness. This boy is set on changing everyone's mind about the big, bad Pit Bull and he's going to do it by kissing and loving on every person he meets. Because that's Dewey. Dewey loves everyone instantly. Dog or person, Dewey thinks whoever he meets is his newest best friend and he's so excited to meet them and start playing and getting cuddles. Speaking of cuddles, Dewey is a champion snuggler. If medals were given out for best snuggler, Dewey would win gold! He loves his walks and playtime and is hoping his forever home will commit to a lot of toys and walks/runs along with the cuddles. He's young still so has energy to burn and a bit of a mischievous streak when he doesn't get his energy out...somehow the kleenex box exploded in the living room while his foster mom was in the shower, Dewey doesn't know what happened but its lucky he was there to keep anything else from spontaneous combustion.:) No cats for this boy please, they're just too much fun to chase.  Dewey is housetrained on a schedule, crates for the workday well, not been a barker, and minds his house manners well. He does require a physically fenced yard due to some "Houdini" moves when tied out. If you're looking for a sweet-as-can-be, energetic buddy to keep you warm on cold nights and active and having fun, consider Dewey. We are all in love with him.

Requirements: Adopter must own home due to breed. No cas. Fenced yard

Name: Emma (Adoption Pending!)
Breed: Feist Cross
Age: Adult
Gender: Female
Description: Emma is a dream dog for a family... house trained, crate trained, very friendly and social. She is always up for an adventure yet enjoys quiet days at home also. Emma is an adult 35-40 pound Feist mix, a southern breed bred for hunting small critters, so does need an active home and one that has a fence or will commit to getting her out and about for daily sniff adventures. She is friendly to kids, dogs and cats. She would love a home with a sense of adventure so she can enjoy wading in the lakes, exploring trails, and parks.

Requirements: No special requirements

Name: Faber
Breed: Heinz 57
Age: Adult
Gender: Male
Description: Faber is a special senior boy of ten years who is looking for his forever home.  He has such a gentle sweet spirit and loves everyone he meets.  He had a tough ten years of life chained up and we are looking for a wonderful forever family who can spoil him for the remainder of his years.  Instead of developing a tough exterior as one might expect, he has remained as sweet as can be!  Faber is housetrained, is fine uncrated while you are not home, and loves a nice leisurely walk.  He is good with people of all ages, and has a calm easy going demeaner.  Due to his age though, a home that does not have young children is preferred.  We would also like to see him find a home with a fenced in yard that he can explore the outdoor world after a life on a chain. Luckily, Faber’s issues are minor.  He is currently being vet treated for some skin issues- previously untreated mange) that should clear up over time and a bad ear infection.  He also has very few teeth, but he can eat regular food that comes in small bites.  He does need some work on the leash as he likes to pull, but is still manageable.  Faber is a true gem that would bring your family lots of warm cuddles on the couch, a companion that is truly grateful for your love and attention, and would go with the flow no matter what you had planned for the day

Requirements: No special requirements

Name: Finnick
Breed: German Shepherd
Age: Young Adult
Gender: Male
Description: Finnick is a silly, exhuberant German Shepherd who came into the pound a complete mess…emaciated to the point he couldn’t stand, sick, covered in mange and infection. A few months with some food, TLC, and good vet care and this boy is a different dog both inside and out. Gone is the dog who was too weak to move and here is the puppy who can play for hours and hours on end and makes a fantastic running partner! An active home who wants an active pup to join in their adventures would be perfect for him. Finn is working on his housetraining, crates for the workday well (though can be a bit vocal about his desire to go with you!), and is working on his house manners. Given the neglect he suffer, he likely never got to enjoy being a puppy so is making up for lost time. He is a BIG perpetual puppy! He loves other dogs and would be an excellent canine companion and playmate. He is not good with cats. Finn needs some training, needs to gain some weight and fill out still, but with a little polishing this boy is going to shine.

Requirements: No cats.

Name: Hedwig
Breed: Shepherd/ Husky Cross
Age: Adult
Gender: Female
Description: Hedwig is an adorable husky/shepherd mix who came to us from down south. Her and her sister Minerva came into the pound down there severely undersocialized. Her and a few other dogs had lived their lives in an outdoor pen, and had no idea how to interact with people or live in a house before coming into rescue. Since coming into foster care, Hedwig has been learning just how much fun life is. She has learned that dog beds are the best place to lay, that toys are so much fun to play with - and that nylabones are the best things EVER (in her mind at least)! She is fostered with other dogs and cats and does well with both, though she is more of a hang out buddy than a play mate. With people she is a little slower to show her trust, but patience, treats, and a few kind words are enough to make her tail start to wag and the goofy grin to come out. And then you get to see her puppy-like enthusiasm while she tosses her toy and rolls around on the carpet like it's the most amazing invention. Once you've earned her trust, Hedwig will give you her everything. Hedwig is house trained on a schedule, meaning she will hold it but doesn't know how to ask. She is crate trained, and views it as her safe place (she will go there to nap or hang out on her own). Hedwig does need to go to a home with another dog and a fenced yard.

Requirements: Fenced yard. No kids. Another dog in the home.

Name: Ingrid (Adoption Pending!)
Breed: Hound/ Pointer/ Lab Cross
Age: Young Adult
Gender: Female
Description: Ingrid is a 10 month old Lab/Pointer/Hound? mix, about 45 pounds of pure sunshine. She loves people of all ages and gets along with dogs of all sizes. Ingrid is fostered with cats and likes to chase if they run, but if they don't she's good. She's house trained, crate trained, and enjoys the fenced backyard and run time with the other dogs. Ingrid is medium energy, requires a 30 minute walk and/or time to burn some energy, and then is the cuddliest dog you have ever met.

Requirements: No special requirements

Name: Lollipop
Breed: Shepherd/ Chow Cross
Age: Adult
Gender: Female
Description: Lollipop is a sweet shepherd/chow mix with manners, good looks, smarts, and a lot of love to share with a forever family. She is housetrained, crates for the workday well in a reinforced/sturdy kennel (she can escape the regular ones), minds her manners well in the house, gets along well with dogs, and is good with older kids. Lollie has one drawback...she's terrified of storms. However, she does very well when given a prescription anti-anxiety medication shortly before a storm and is given a safe place in the basement to call her own during stormy weather but needs a home committed to this otherwise she is destructive. Lollie loves to go for walks, loves to hang out in the yard (fenced), but is overall a calmer more laid-back girl. She is just about the perfect dog and we can't say enough good things about this little love. Lollie is about 4 years old, 50 lbs.

Requirements: Home willing to work with the storm anxiety

Name: Lucky
Breed: Pit Bull Cross
Age: Young Adult
Gender: Female
Description: Lucky is a 35 pound young adult female Pit Bull mix who always has a look on her face as though she's waiting to hear what adventure is next. Outgoing, always happy, friendly, she loves to play and is excellent with other dogs and people of all ages. Previously an outside dog, she is learning the house training, and crates for the workday. She'd thrive in an active home wanting an playful young dog. She has a permanent scar down her back from chemical burns from a cheap flea prevention that burned her skin. It doesn't hurt, and doesn't affect her at all. She also had a fracture on her pelvis below the hip socket that we will not be fixing as it has healed and does not affect her mobility nor cause pain She can still run like the wind and leap like a gazelle. Lucky is available after May 6th. She has not been with cats that we know of.

Requirements: Adopter must own home due to breed mix

Name: Luki
Breed: Black Lab
Age: Mature Adult
Gender: Female
Description: Luki is a 7 year old female Lab mix with a lot of heart, a curious nature, energy for walks and playtime, a strong hunting drive to keep the yard free of critters, and a sense of humor. This dog makes us laugh all the time. Luki was dumped at a high kill shelter and luckily that grey muzzle was taken in by a foster home. When she got here, we realized she also has cataracts, likely had them since a juvenile, so very used to making her way around with them. She does the steps carefully, sometimes bumps into things, but it sure doesn't slow her down. Luki loves other dogs, is well trained in the house, not a chewer or barker. She would thrive in a home with a fenced in yard for her, and she sure loves toys. Luki does not do well with cats. She transitions hard, so her next home needs a very patient adopter willing to hang in there with her for a couple days of pacing and crying as she adjusts... she really bonds hard, and given a few days will easily change that bond to you. She's worth the couple days wait.

Requirements: Fenced yard preferred. No cats.

Name: Luna
Breed: Yellow Lab Cross
Age: Adult
Gender: Female
Description: Luna is a 45lb adult female Lab/mystery mix; we suspect she has about 10 different breeds in her. One of them must be a hunting breed as she sure can clear the yard of small critters, and a retriever as she loves to play fetch!   She is also an excellent guard dog too and uses her big ears to hone in on solicitors or people at the door.  Luna is a fantastic family dog; she is great with kids and greets strangers warmly.  She loves going on walks and on car rides; she's always up for being active!  Luna is tolerant of other dogs and does fine meeting them out and about.  She loves to play but will need to play with dogs who love to play back!  Most cats may not tolerate this.  She is housetrained but will need frequent outings as she will need to void her bladder to keep urinary crystals from building up in her bladder.  She is currently on a special urinary diet and will need to continue to be on it.  She will consistently reward you with lots of sweet kisses and fur-ever be a loyal and loving companion.

Requirements: Special diet

Name: Malachi
Breed: Black Lab/ Golden Retriever Cross
Age: Adult
Gender: Female
Description: Malachi is a young adult male Lab cross, likely around 65 pounds, and he is a very good boy. He is very friendly, loves other dogs and people, and loves to play- tennis balls are a favorite. He also loves tug, playing chase, and snuggle time. Malachi is currently fostered with a runner and he loves going with her on runs, as well as walks. He likes brushing, and storms don't bother him. He is comfortable in a crowd and enjoys being praised for all the good things he does. Malachi has learned several commands and is doing well with house training, is very good crated for the workday as well. He can and has jumped a 3 foot fence to play with the neighbor dog, shows zero desire to run away but likes to hop over to play. Malachi's one and only downside is that he still mouths your hands and arms in play, like a puppy. It doesn't hurt, and he responds well to being told NO, but it's partly age and partly who he is-- he is a Lab mix. This fantastic dog is going to make a perfect companion. He would prefer a home with yard space and an active owner, and has not been around cats.

Name: Minerva
Breed: Shepherd/ Husky Cross
Age: Adult
Gender: Female
Description: Minerva is a sweet, shy gal who came to us from down south. She and her sister Minerva came into the pound severely undersocialized. She was terrified of life - and when you got her out of the kennel run she turned into a lump, refusing to move. She had lived her life in an outdoor pen, and had no idea how to live in a house when she came into rescue. To say that's changed since coming into foster care is an understatement! Still shy yes, but happy! Treats have been the key to her success, she'll do just about anything for a couple of Bil-Jacs. She has been learning how to play, what toys are for, and how's it's okay to sleep on the comfy dog beds. Every day she comes out of her shell a little more, and her personality shines. Silly, playful, and puppy-like, it's obvious she is trying to make up for lost time. Minerva is fostered with other dogs and cats and does fine with both. With her submissive personality, she would prefer a calmer canine companion to hang out with rather than roughhouse. Minerva is house trained on a schedule, meaning she will hold it but doesn't know how to ask to go out yet. She is kennel trained, and will dive into it on command. We do require her to go to a home with another dog and a fenced in yard. She's great with all sizes of dogs, and even cats, but no young children because of how much their movements would frighten her. Minerva may be a dog that takes a little bit of work, but she's worth it. You can see her gratitude with every gentle lick, with every happy expression you catch on her face when she's realized how much fun something is. Sharing her successes and triumphs is a reward like no other. If you have a little time, a little patience, and a few kind words, Minerva will make you smile every day that she is with you.

Name: Mona
Breed: Doxie Cross
Age: Senior
Gender: Female
Description: Mona is a hoot! This grey faced middle aged Doxie mix has two speeds, fast and sleep. It's hard to judge her age due to her varying speeds so we are guessing somewhere between 8 and 13. She is like teenage girl who loves to hear herself talk. Mona has the quirkiest bay that she does, like a beagle so no shared walls for this girl. She is housebroken but often times needs to be coaxed outside. Mona does need a fenced yard because when she is outside she loves to explore. She rides well in the car. Mona thinks cats are the best toy there is because they run, so she needs a home with dog savy cats. Mona prefers her bed rather than snuggling with her human. We guess it's her southern belle independent streak. She likes the company of other dogs but would also be fine as an only dog. Food is Mona's favorite thing in the world and she will stop at nothing to get it. She will definitely keep you on your toes. Mona has had a dental, spayed, mammary tumors removed, up to date on her shots, and housebroken. She does have some old lady lumps and bumps but they only add to her charm. Mona is looking for an adopter who needs a little fun and laughter in their life along with the most reliable and loving companion there is.

He's a nice size, and perfect as a companion to take to the park, a patio restaurant, and walks.

Name: Nikki (Adoption Pending!)
Breed: Chocolate Lab Cross
Age: Young Adult
Gender: Female
Description: Nikki is a 1 year old female chocolate Lab mix, daughter of Crimson, and also so very Lab.. all the traits people love. She's comfortable with kids, great with other dogs, meets strangers politely, loves to swim and fetch and walk and go for car rides. As long as she gets to go, she'll travel anywhere with you. Nikki was previously an outside dog and is learning her house training, doing very well. She is crated for the workday and young enough to need a good walk when you get home after a day away. She's a very agreeable dog. Nikki is used to yard space so a home with a yard is preferred, fenced or unfenced. She is available to adopt April 22nd.

Name: Nola
Breed: Black Lab Cross
Age: Young Adult
Gender: Female
Description: Nola is a high-energy, ball-crazy, happy Lab mix. She takes loving the tennis ball and loving fetch to a whole new level. She would play fetch until she collapsed or your arm fell off, whichever came first.  This girl needs a job or a highly active home to keep her mind and body busy. She is young, needs some manners taught but she is sharp minded and so eager to work and please her owner. She learns things in a flash. Nola is excellent with other dogs, cannot be placed with cats or small animals, and best suited to a home with older kids only because of her energy level and lack of awareness when she is chasing a ball or playing (she WILL knock people over!). She shows absolutely no aggression whatsoever, just really doesn’t understand to be gentle with the little ones. Nola would excel in a home who wanted to do a dog sport with her…dock diving or flyball would be absolutely right up her alley but she would likely do equally well in hunting or agility with training. However, she first and foremost would like to be a companion. Nola is about 1-2 years old, 50 lbs.

Requirements: No cats. Home dedicated to tiring her out physically and mentally

Name: Paisley
Breed: Anatolian Shepherd/ German Shepherd Cross
Age: Young Adult
Gender: Female
Description: Paisley is a big puppy in both size and in personality! Initially a little wary with new experiences, as her shyness sheds off, out comes a puppy ready for adventure! She loves to run in the yard (fenced), loves to play, and recently discovered just how much fun toys are. Paisley is good with other large dogs and is absolutely in her element wrestling and running around with them. She would love a home with another active dog who can show her the ropes. Paisley seems to have been an outdoor dog before and many things are new to her….being in the house, walking on a leash, meeting people, etc. She needs a home with the patience and experience to continue her training and build her confidence in new situations. She is housetrained on a schedule and crates well for the workday.. If you have the patience and time for continued training and confidence building and are looking for a big, active puppy to join in on your adventures, Paisley is your girl!

Name: Peanut
Breed: Terrier/ Pug Cross
Age: Adult
Gender: Male
Description: Peanut is an adorable Pug/Terrier mix ( best guess) who came to rescue when his owner passed away, and he is grieving him. He was his best friend and protector for about 4 years and now hhe's a little lost. He is house trained, not been a chewer, and has always lived with another dog, Squirrel. Visiting grandkids were welcomed by him, and he has had experience living with a cat also. He is very unsure of what's going on and will need a patient adopter willing to allow him some grief time as well as adjust to a new home. He's sweet but shy, and brave yet unsure. One thing he's really, really good at is bonding to a person and being their constant companion. He would do best in a home with yard space.

Name: Perky
Breed: Shepherd/ Lab Cross
Age: Young Adult
Gender: Female
Description: Hi my name is Perky, but my foster mom calls me Pepper. She tells me I got that name because I am a sweet southern girl, but I can be a bit spicy too! I was born in Kentucky, but I found myself in a shelter and do you believe that my people did not come to get me? How can you say no to those eyes?! I am about 7 months old now, so I do still have quite a bit of puppy energy, but I am on the petite side at only 35lbs. Perky is doing great on her house training, and she is a dream in her kennel. She loves going for walks, playing with toys, meeting other dogs and just being a goofy puppy. She wants to make friends with the cat, but the cat is not so in love with her- so a home with either no cats or a dog savvy cat would be best for her. Her favorite thing on walks is meeting the tiny humans, and while she’d be a great addition to any home, a home with kids would be something I think she would love. Overall, she is a very well adjusted puppy, and would make anyone a great dog.

You can follow Perky on Instagram to see more pictures, (even if you don’t have an instagram account) and see what she does day-to-day here!

Name: Phantom
Breed: German Shepherd/ Belgian Malinois Cross
Age: Young Adult
Gender: Male
Description: Phantom is a young Shepherd/ Malinois mix with a passion for learning. If you are looking for a dog you can teach a thousand tricks to, who will make you look like an amazing trainer, and who loves to learn and work, Phantom is your boy! He would absolutely excel in a dog sport or trick training and needs something similar to keep him busy. He already knows his basics and is eager to learn more. Typical to his breeds, if he is not kept mentally and physically active he finds his own fun and its never good so he is seeking an active home who wants a dog to do things with beyond the norm. He can be very mouthy and excitable but calms down with a confident handler who will not feed into and allow the over excitability. Phantom is excellent with other large breed dogs and loves to play. He would love a home with another high energy, like-minded companion to pal around and play with. He is not good with cats or small animals. Phantom has an off-switch when tired out and is quite the velcro boy. Cuddles are a runner up favorite to learning and playing. If you are an active home seeking a super smart dog to train and work with, Phantom would love to meet you!

Requirements: No cats. A strong commitment to daily physical and mental exercise. Adult/older child (12+) home.

Name: Pirate
Breed: Husky Malamute Cross
Age: Young Adult
Gender: Male
Description: Pirate is a one-eyed, fluffball of a husky/malamute mix with a true passion for life. This dog loves everything life has to offer…toys, treats, swimming, walks/runs, playing in the yard, other dogs, and then happily curling up on a fluffy dog bed to chill with his people. He is a high-energy dog, typical husky so needs an active home who will tire him out physically and mentally. He loves to learn tricks and commands when there are treats involved otherwise, typical husky, he’s hit or miss depending on what he wants to do. He’s stubborn, silly, and has a naughty streak a mile long that makes his foster family laugh. His cute face saves him from trouble every time though. Pirate is working on his housetraining, crates for the workday but needs a shove to get him in there, and is working on learning how to behave in a house. He is excellent with other dogs, needs a home without cats or small animals, and is best suited to a home with older, respectful kids who will take an active role in his training otherwise he tends to be too bossy and pushy with them. He does require a fenced yard due to his sight limitations. Pirate came into the pound with a dead eyeball caused by severe lens wasting that is likely the result of genetics. His other eye is a good health at this point and he can see fine, just has a minor cataract that is being treated, but because of the potential for the eye issues to be genetic, he may lose sight in the other eye someday as well. Pirate is hoping for an owner who will commit to him and love him no matter what the future holds for him.

Requirements: No cats. Fenced yard.

Name: Rex
Breed: Pit Bull/ Shepherd Cross
Age: Young Adult
Gender: Male
Description: Rex is a young male Pit Bull/Shepherd mix who wears his heart on his sleeve. A sweet, gentle boy this guy hands out kisses and cuddles to everyone he comes across. He’s never once met a stranger, only his newest best friends. He sure has a lot going for him…housetrained, smart, knows basic obedience and a few tricks, minds his manners well in the house, and has incredible social skills. Rex is a social butterfly, happy to play with every dog he meets and greet every person. He is excellent with other dogs and loves to play with them. He’s active and playful without being hyper and is happy to relax on the couch after he gets a long walk and some playtime. Rex does have a downside…he has pretty severe separation anxiety. What that means in a home for Rex is that we are looking for someone who is home more often than not, willing to invest in a sturdy, reinforced crate for when they are gone, and someone who is willing to continue the training to minimize the anxiety when they leave. This is a tall order, we know, but Rex is extremely worth it. He has one of the kindest hearts we’ve ever come across in rescue. He is everyone’s best friend. Photo courtesy of Ciao Bella Photography.

Requirements: An adopter who is home home more often than not, willing to invest in an "indestructible" kennel, and will continue training for the separation anxiety.

Name: Ria
Breed: Belgian Malinois/ Shepherd Cross
Age: Young Adult
Gender: Female
Description: Ria is a young adult Belgian Malinois mix with a soft nature, a serious side that makes training her a breeze, and an equally energetic, silly side that's always up for some fun!   She makes a fantastic running/walking partner and never turns down the chance to run around and be a goofball in the yard.  She is learning what toys are and is fascinated with them. Ria loves to learn and picks up training in a flash. She thrives on knowing what is expected of her and hearing that she is a "good girl". She is a young girl still at about 1-2 years old so she's got energy to burn but she works hard to remember her manners in the house. She is working on her housetraining and picking it up quickly. She crates for the workday though is an expert Houdini at escaping the typical wire/plastic crates so needs a reinforced crate. Ria is excellent with other dogs but needs a home without cats (they're far too fun to chase!).  She would love an active home who wants a dog to take with on all their adventures.

Requirements: No cats.

Name: Salsa
Breed: Pit Bull Cross
Age: Young Adult
Gender: Female
Description: Salsa is a young adult Pit Bull who might have a little bit of sea lion and Tigger the Tiger mixed in. She has the sleak, pretty look of the sea lion and the springs in her legs like Tigger! This girl is all about having a good time and finding the fun in everything. She loves walks, playtime, running with the other dogs, and is learning the fun and joy of toys. She equally knows how to settle down and mind her manners in the house (as well as any young dog can!). Salsa is discovering what being a house dog means. She's clearly never been in a house and while she's a little unsure, she is handling it so bravely and excited to learn what its like to be a loved pet for the first time in her life. Housetraining is a work in progress but she is learning it super fast and crates quietly for the workday. She loves other dogs and is an excellent playmate and is fine with cats. Salsa is looking for a bully breed loving home who will finish up the training with her and will promise her a forever of being a loved member of the family.

Requirements: Adopter must own home due to breed mix.

Name: Sandy
Breed: Yellow Lab/ Pointer Cross
Age: Young Adult
Gender: Female
Description: Sandy is a young adult female Lab/Pointer who is very comfortable with kids and other dogs, house trained, crate trained, and about 60 pounds. Sandy does require a physically fenced yard as she is a runner, and prior adopters tried Invisible Fence and a tie out with no success. She would thrive in a home who wants a dog to run with them, swim and fetch and boat and do all the Lab things. She had been good with adopters when they were out with her but when their attention was distracted, wanderlust took over. She also does chase cats. If you have kids, dogs, a fenced yard, and want a happy and loving dog, she's your girl. She is sweet as can be and gets along very well with everyone.

Requirements: Fenced yard. No cats

Name: Sara
Breed: Lab/ Pit Bull Cross
Age: Adult
Gender: Female
Description: Sara is a 2 year old Lab/Pit Bull mix type mix, a laid back and super chill girl whose absolute favorite pastime are naps in the sun and giving kisses-- she'd be a great family dog. If you are ever looking for her, check the nearest cozy place and you'll find her all cuddled in. That being said, she does require a fair amount of activity a day, and it's good for both of you.  Sara loves walks and likes bouncing around like Tigger when she sees someone or something that she must go meet, or a toy that needs to be pounced on.  She also seeks out any attention and time from people of all ages as well and is a loving dog. She has the Lab smarts and desire to please, combined with the Pit Bull trait of being a little mellower and VERY snuggly. She has never been around cats. Sara does very well with other calmer dogs, respects them and is a good companion. Due to her breed mix, we are asking that her adopter owns their home. If you're looking for a good family dog or ideal first time dog, please let us know.

Name: Sly
Breed: Corgi/Doxie Cross
Age: Young Adult
Gender: Male
Description: Sly is about a year old and about 19 pounds.  Our best guess is he's a Corgi or Doxie mix.  He's doing well with housetraining and is accustomed to being crated when left at home but would make a different choice if it were up to him.  At night he sleeps happily in a crate, and often puts himself to bed.  He's a gentle, happy, playful, adorable little guy.  He's been instantly comfortable around new dogs, and shy around new people.  He was very unsure/shy initially in his foster home, but those days are long gone.  He took a few weeks to really settle in, figure out the routine, and decide that people are good.  Now, after almost 4 weeks, he's a happy little cuddler who follows his foster mom from room to room.  He's quiet in the house.  In the yard he does like to warn you when there are new things happening outside the fence.  Sly wrestles with gusto with the resident dog that is 3 times his size.  He loves going on walks, riding in the car, and romping/sniffing around the backyard, all with other dogs.  Sly is a follower rather than a leader and we are requiring that he be adopted into a home with another confident dog that he can follow and learn from.  He needs a home that will be patient with his initial shyness and will be comfortable taking it slowly, working to build his confidence, and allowing him to adjust in his own time.  He's a sweetheart and is well worth the effort .

Requirements: Fenced yard. Another dog in the home

Name: Squirrel
Breed: Lab/ Shepherd/ Terrier Cross
Age: Adult
Gender: Female
Description: Squirrel is an adult female Lab/Shepherd? type mix, but full grown at about 40 pounds. This quiet girl came to us when her owner passed away. She is still trying to make sense of all that happened, but she sure is being brave and trying. She is house trained, not a chewer or barker, and seems to prefer a more low key, quiet home that fits her personality. She likes walks but is a mellow, easy going dog. Squirrel is used to having a canine companion and is fine with the cat at her foster home. She is cautiously polite to the visiting kids but when they get too rowdy, she puts herself in her crate-- she is used to a more predictable adult home. This girl is such a good dog who has so much to offer. She is used to a yard and would prefer a house with yard space to an apartment please.

Name: Star
Breed: Black Lab Cross
Age: Mature Adult
Gender: Female
Description: Star is a mature adult Black Lab who acts like a dog much younger than her age would suggest!  She is all about walks, adventures, and having fun with her people.  She has a silly side that comes out when she sees her leash come out for walks or when toys come out.  Yes, show this middle aged lady a toy and watch her turn into an instant puppy!  She is good with older, respectful kids who mind her space...she, like many dogs, isn't a huge fan of hugs or little ones getting up in her business.  Star is well housetrained, crates for the workday well though probably doesn't need it with her great manners, and knows a few basic commands.  She is smart and very food-motivated so training her is a breeze...whoever said old dogs can't learn new tricks clearly never met Star!  Star does not care for other pets so she needs a home who wants her to be their one and only.  She is not a dog to take to the dog park or to bring to a friend's for a doggy playdate, she simply doesn't enjoy the company of other canines or felines.  She would much prefer the peace of her own home as the one and only furry friend and what a devoted friend you have in Star.  It doesn't get much more loving than her happy dance when she sees you or her wiggles of joy for absolutely any scrap of attention paid her way. She radiates love and joy for her family and for all people she meets.

Requirements: No cats. No other dogs. Older kids/adults

Name: Stitch
Breed: Black Lab Cross
Age: Adult
Gender: Male
Description: Stitch is a young Black Lab mix with a passion for fetch!  He is smart and loves to learn...as long as you have a ball in your hand, Stitch will do anything for you. He is housetrained with a schedule, crates for the workday, knows what is appropriate to chew/what isn't, and minds his manners in the house well as long as he gets plenty of exercise. Stitch's biggest hurdle to adoption...he was run over by his owners as a puppy causing a broken hip that's been repaired with FHO surgery but also loss of bladder control. He can only hold his bladder about 4-5 hours max so needs a home with a doggy door, an outdoor setup, or a home willing and able to accommodate his potty needs. Stitch is excellent with other larger dogs, not good with kitties (he thinks they're fun to chase), and better with older kids who can take a role in his training. He would do best in a home who will show him firmly but lovingly that they are the boss otherwise he tries to test the limits a bit (typical teenager!). Stitch wants nothing more than to be loved. He loves to snuggle up on the couch, loves his people, and his favorite place after a nice long game of fetch is right by his foster mom's feet. He is a loving, smart, social Lab who has been waiting for a home for far too long.

Requirements: No cats. No young kids.

Name: Striker
Breed: Pit Bull
Age: Senior
Gender: Male
Description: Striker is a 9 year old male Pit Bull who came to rescue after spending 11 months in animal control, which says a lot about his character... not many dogs can maintain a friendly attitude and their sanity after that long in a kennel, but something about him persevered and during that, he charmed everyone he met. Now in a foster home, he is thriving. He loves blankets, lots of them, and is very mellow and relaxed in his crate but behaves himself equally well when left loose. Striker is house trained. His favorite toys are tennis balls, and he plays a mean game of fetch. He's about 60 lbs and is treat motivated which helps with training. He has not been around cats so would do best in a cat free home, and has done well with canine siblings at his foster home.

Name: Timber
Breed: German Shepherd
Age: Young Adult
Gender: Male
Description: Timber is a stunning German Shepherd with brains and brawn. This is one big boy! Timber is looking for a home who understands and enjoys shepherds because he is all shepherd in personality. He needs an active home who will tire him out physically and mentally otherwise he gets bored and finds his own games which, while he enjoys, we promise you likely won't. He is smart as a whip and learns things in a flash and would love a home where that brain is put to good use. Timber needs a home who will lovingly and firmly set boundaries and rules for him. When he has a confident handler and he knows what is expected of him, he toes the line perfectly but he's the kind of boy where if you give him an inch, he takes a mile. He is housetrained on a schedule, crates for the workday well though is vocal about it, and is working on learning his basic manners and how to be a good canine citizen. He is excellent with other large breed dogs. Timber would be best suited for an active home experienced with shepherds or other large breed working dogs. He has not been around cats that we know of but we suspect his prey drive to be too high to be a suitable match for kitties.

Requirements: No cats. Experienced home required.

He's good off leash, knows obedience and several tricks, not a barker or a chewer. Tuko has had a lot of training time spent with him and it shows.
