Welcome to Heading Home K9 Rescue!

Did you see a dog that caught your eye? Ready to start the adoption process? Happy to help! Feel free to email the dog's listed contact with any questions you have...the dogs live in our homes with us so we know them very well. Please also download and fill out the preadopt application (Heading Home K9 Rescue Preadopt Application) and email it in to the listed contact for the dog(s) you are interested in. We read through the application, check references, and once approved (we aim for 24-48 hours to approve or deny), we set up a visit with you and the foster home or direct you to an adoption event to meet the dog(s). Fosters are more than happy to answer questions that arise. We all want a good match the first time, and a successful experience for the adopter and the dog.
After meeting, you can choose to outright adopt, or do a foster to adopt, where you complete an extra form and gain a 1-2 week period to see how the dog adjusts, and if the fit between the dog and your home is right. We encourage adopters to give it a MINIMUM of 3 days. Returning a dog before that period means it never had a chance to settle in and show you what the true personality is like. Moving dogs between homes is stressful and not in the dog's best interests. We are here to support you after adoption also, answering questions and helping make the process as positive as we can. We highly recommend you read the tips in this packet (Adopting 101) before bringing your new dog home...it will help greatly ease the transition and make it a positive experience for everyone!

Our adoption fees are non-negotiable and average about $350 which includes their vet work-spay/neuter, vaccinations, heartworm testing (if old enough), and deworming. Often the vet costs far exceed the adoption fee, especially on our special needs dogs. We rely on adoption fees to be able to continue to rescue more dogs in need.

NEXT PET ADOPTION-- Our next pet adoption will be on Sunday, March 26th from 12-2 at the Edina Chuck and Dons

REMINDER: It is always a good idea to email the contact listed in each dog's bio to find out of s/he will be attending an adoption event before making the drive. Many dogs do not attend the adoption events.

HEADING HOME DOGS LOOKING FOR HOMES:

Name: Artie
Breed: Pointer/ Aussie Cross
Age: Adult
Gender: Male
Description: Artie is a 40 pound male Aussie/Pointer mix, likely with about 20 other breeds. After being picked up as an unclaimed stray, Artie spent 4 months in the pound, and animal control workers got desperate-- he was way too sweet and gentle to put down, yet they don't have the space to hold them forever. When they reached out to rescue, and sent videos of him with dogs and cats and kids, we knew he could find a home here in MN. He is doing very well in foster care here, learning the house training quickly, quiet in the crate. Artie is submissive and gentle with kids and other dogs, shares his home with cats, and is learning how to share his foster mom's lap. He's a quieter dog who is always trying to be polite, so his joy is usually somewhat reserved, but we are seeing him break out of his shell more and more each day. He loves to cuddle and give kisses, and squeeze into the smallest of spaces to share with you. Things like walking on the leash and coming when called are works in progress, but we know he'll learn them. He was heartworm treated, and is otherwise also vetted, so ready to go to a new home.

Requirements: Home with yard space.

You can email kladams4545@gmail.com with questions and for a preadopt application. This dog has been spayed/neutered, vaccinated as age appropriate, tested for heartworm disease if age appropriate, and dewormed.

Name: Ashley
Breed: Lab/ Pit Bull Cross
Age: Young Adult
Gender: Female
Description: Ashley is a young adult female Lab/Pit Bull? mix, a gentle soul who is happiest when she is snuggling her people or playing outside with a dog friend. Fostered with dogs of multiple sizes, she gets along with everyone-- big dogs, small dogs, and has a healthy respect for cats as well. She is lovely with children, her gentle sweetness shines through. She can be a little shy at first but her curiousity and desire to make friends means it doesn't last long. She is house trained, crate trained, and would be thrilled to find a home with a fenced yard and another dog-- playtime with a canine companion is when she's happiest, followed second by snuggle time on the couch.

Requirements: Adopter must own home due to breed mix. Fenced yard.

You can email kladams4545@gmail.com with questions and for a preadopt application. This dog has been spayed/neutered, vaccinated as age appropriate, tested for heartworm disease if age appropriate, and dewormed.

Name: Ava
Breed: English Bulldog
Age: Adult
Gender: Female
Description: Ava is an adult female English Bulldog seeking a very specific home. Very cuddly and affectionate, she is seeking a home familiar with the breed to give her a 1:1 home with a lot of attention- she is used to someone home most of the time. Best with dults, she is very dog aggressive, so needs a home as a single dog and a fenced yard. She is very very friendly and loving with people and as a single dog with a fenced yard she is the perfect companion dog. She is house trained, healthy, vetted, and used to sharing the couch and the bed. Ava has been very loved and well cared for, and is looking for a new home due to not getting along well with the young kids/other dog in her current placement.

Requirements: Fenced yard. No other pets. No young kids.

You can email kladams4545@gmail.com with questions and for a preadopt application. This dog has been spayed/neutered, vaccinated as age appropriate, tested for heartworm disease if age appropriate, and dewormed.

Name: Axel (Adoption Pending!)
Breed: Anatolian Shepherd Cross
Age: Young Adult
Gender: Male
Description: Axel is an 11 month old, 95 pound Anatolian Shepherd mix who is a giant teddy bear. This guy is already house trained, does need a puppy proofed space to be home alone in, and does very well with people of all ages and other dogs. He has no idea he's not a lap dog and at 11 months old we're not ready to burst that bubble yet for him. He's a goofy, playful, very affectionate dog.

Requirements: Home with a yard

Name: Bane`
Breed: Akita
Age: Adult
Gender: Male
Description: Bane is a stunning Akita who defines the Akita breed…loyal, watchful, a dash of a stubborn streak, and incredibly beautiful. Bane’s tough dog exterior (and his big bark!) hides a soft soul who loves his people beyond measure. Once he bonds, you have a best friend for life. Bane is housetrained on a schedule, crates for the workday (though hates the crate and it’s a bit of a fight to get him in there), and minds his manners well in the house. He is a barker when appropriate so is not suitable to a home with shared walls (apartment, townhome, etc). Bane is an active dog who loves his walks and playtime but settles nicely once he is tired out. He is not good with cats or small animals. He is tolerant of other dogs though would be best in a home as an only dog or with a submissive, female who will respect his space. Like most Akitas, Bane has a stubborn, dominant streak and needs an experienced handler who will firmly, yet lovingly set the rules and boundaries for him. He toes the line perfectly once he knows what is expected of him but he needs a handler who can control a powerful, intelligent dog. Please do your research on this breed before considering adopting Bane, Akitas are fabulous companions in the right home but they are not the dog for everyone. Bane is a beautiful representation of his breed in both looks and temperament.

Requirements: No cats. Experienced Home Required.

Name: Barbie
Breed: Shepherd Cross
Age: Young Adult
Gender: Female
Description: Barbie is a 10 month old smaller female Shepherd mix, about 45 pounds right now and a gentle soul. Even being so young, she gently passes out kisses and enjoys playtime, but is a mellower girl. She loves walks, especially melts around kids, and does very well with other dogs. All we have right now is her shelter picture, and she sure knows how to work those eyes. Barbie is learning the house training and is a smart dog, picking it up quickly, and is crate trained for the workday. She is young and needs more training, but is a sweet soul who loves to please.

Requirements: No special requirements

Name: Bear
Breed: Black Lab Cross
Age: Adult
Gender: Male
Description: Bear is a 3 year old male Lab mix who was sadly surrendered due to his elderly owner not being able to care for him. He is a perfect starter dog, or perfect for a family looking for a good pet. He is house trained, loves other dogs and kids, lived very happily with a cat. He is used to being on the furniture and loves walks and car rides. He's just a well adjusted, happy, smart Lab guy.

Requirements: No special requirements

Name: Blitz
Breed: German Shepherd
Age: Adult
Gender: Male
Description: Blitz is a handsome German Shepherd boy with a love of playing with toys.  He is happiest with a ball in his mouth and some space to run around and burn his energy off. Blitz found his way into a local impound the result of lack of training and an open fence gate causing him to chase and bite a child in play. Shepherds are herding breeds after all and he was doing what he thought was all in good fun! He needs a home with no kids due to his size, lack of training, and previous bite. Blitz is housetrained, crates well, minds his manners well in the house, and is working on learning his basic commands. He is a very smart boy and it shows in how quickly he picks things up...he learned he needed to drop the tennis ball and sit for it to be thrown again in about 10 minutes. His last owner loved him and cared for him well but skipped the training and shepherds need both love and training to be successful, well-mannered companions. He would do best in a home with shepherd experience, time to train, and the ability to manage his wild side with training and exercise. He does require a physically fenced yard or a home outside the city with acreage he can be trained to stay on.  He is not good with cats and would be best placed as an only dog.

Requirements: Experienced Home Required. No cats. Physically fenced yard or acreage

Name: Bosco
Breed: German Shepherd/ Rottweiler Cross
Age: Adult
Gender: Male
Description: Bosco is a big, handsome 3-4 year old Rottie/Shepherd mix who is loyal, loving, and quite the goofball. He is happiest following his person around for hours on end, finding some funny mischief to get into, and always is ready for a scratch and some love. Bosco came into rescue with serious hip issues that made it difficult for him to lead a normal life. We expected him to need surgery but as it turned out his issues are too severe even for surgery to correct. He has little to no muscle in his back legs making surgery a poor choice.  Bosco is on lifelong pain management, joint supplements, and injections of Adequan (synthetic joint medication). Now this sounds like a pretty poor quality of life, nope, not for Bosco! He is so happy to be pain free for the first time in a long time that he plays like a puppy, he runs, he fetches, he counter surfs (naughty boy!), and is overjoyed for every minute he gets to spend having fun. We don't know what his life holds long term. He might eventually be a surgery candidate, he might not. He might live a shorter life due to the severity of his injuries or he might live a normal lifespan. We simply cannot predict so he needs an adopter who is willing to commit to whatever his life brings and willing and able to emotionally and financially commit to continuing to manage his pain and hips so he can live pain-free. Bosco is excellent with other dogs, adores people of all ages, and has never met a stranger, only new best friends. He does need a cat-free home. He is housetrained, crates well for the workday, loves to chew on bones and toys. (Photo courtesy of Ciao Bella Photography)

Requirements: Medical special needs. No cats

Name: Callie
Breed: Terrier/ Lab Cross
Age: Young Adult
Gender: Female
Description: Callie is a 6 month old Lab/Terrier-- not sure if its Rat Terrier, Pit Bull Terrier, etc- who is about 30 pounds at 6-8 months old. Her ears make us smile, they go every which way. Callie is pretty dependent on the other dogs, she enjoys their company quite a bit and really takes her lead from them. She also loves kids, and gets along very well with cats. She is crate trained for the workday and overnight, is very quiet and relaxed in there. Callie is learning to walk on the leash, it scares her a little bit, and her house training is going well. She appears to have been mistreated before, she ducks and flinches if you move quickly or raise your voice at all. Never has she shown any aggression though, just closes her eyes and waits for the suspected hit. We are loving her up and showing her people can be kind, and she loves to be petted and praised. She'd do best with a yard to be in for outside time rather than an apartment.

Requirements: No special requirements

Name: Cato
Breed: Shepherd/ Rottie/ Terrier Cross
Age: Young Adult
Gender: Male
Description: Cato is a 40 lb, 2 year old mixed up three-legged mutt who will look like a puppy forever.  He is determined as well to never leave his puppy joy behind either!  This sweet boy can find fun in anything.  He loves playing with other dogs, loves toys, loves to go out and about meeting people, and then happily collapses for a nap on a dog bed once his energy is out.  He is housetrained on a schedule and minds his manners well in the house (though occasional things still fall victim to being chewed!).  Cato's biggest hurdle for finding a home and what has kept him in rescue for over a year is his separation anxiety.  He needs an extra sturdy, reinforced crate to contain him when his people leave as well as a home experienced (or willing to learn!) in managing and working with separation anxiety behaviors.  Cato loves his walks and playtime, missing a leg doesn't slow him down in the slightest, and would love an active person/family to pick him as theirs.  (Photo courtesy of Ciao Bella Photography)

Requirements: Home committed to training and working with the separation anxiety.

Name: Chester (Adoption Pending!)
Breed: Beagle
Age: Adult
Gender: Male
Description: Chester is a 2 year old male Beagle who was previously a stray, and with his couch potato tendancies and coming from the south, its likely he was a failed hunting dog. He can hunt out treats, an open hand to pet him, and maybe sniff out a dog friend nearby, but that's about it for him. He LOVES other dogs and his mellow attitude endears him to other dogs. He's been good with cats at the shelter but has not lived with them. Chester's ideal home would have a fenced yard to play in or someone to go for walks, and another dog.

Requirements: Preference given to home with another dog

Name: Cooper (Adoption Pending!)
Breed: Yellow Lab Cross
Age: Adult
Gender: Male
Description: Cooper is a sunny, happy Yellow Lab (mix?) who is a snuggler.  A little hesitant at first, he warms up in about 3 seconds when there are kind words and a treat in hand.  Cooper loves other dogs, fine with the kitties, and absolutely melts for the kids.  He is working on his housetraining, crates for the workday, and is learning the house manners and typical house things like stairs, tile floor, etc.  He was previously an outside dog and he happily left that life behind him for life as a house dog!  Cooper loves walks and even has pretty nice leash manners.  If you're looking for a solid, smart, loving Lab, this guy is perfect.

Name: Cora
Breed: Black Lab/ Pit Bull Cross
Age: Young Adult
Gender: Female
Description: Cora is an energetic, outgoing Lab/Pit Bull mix who makes friends instantly wherever she goes.  She loves other dogs and loves to play, loves people with a passion, does well with kids though best with older kids who aren't as easily knocked down, and greets everyone she meets like they're her long lost best friend.  She is good with dog-savvy cats though she tries to play with them. She is housetrained, crates well for the workday, barks appropriately, and has been good about chewing on toys/bones only.  She keeps getting passed over because her manners when she first meets someone are atrocious.  She jumps up for hugs, wiggles all over, pulls like a truck on the leash, and acts like a complete wild child.  She needs some training and some time spent with her but she is sharp minded, food motivated, and incredibly responsive to training.  She would be the absolute star of an obedience class.  Cora is an active girl and loves nothing more than a good run/walk and some playtime.  She goes silly for toys and loves to play.  If you are an active home looking for a little love and fun in your life, please consider Cora.

Requirements: Adopter must own home due to breed mix.

Name: Crystal
Breed: Shepherd Cross
Age: Adult
Gender: Female
Description: Crystal is a lanky, long legged, smiley 3 year old Shepherd mix who got her ticket out of the shelter due to being a staff favorite. She's curious, always loving, gets along great with other dogs and people. Crystal is doing well with house training, crates for the workday, and would love a home who can commit to daily walks/runs to feed her sense of adventure. She's a sweet dog who is patiently waiting for a home of her own. She has never been around cats but being a Shepherd mix, we assume she'd chase them.

Name: Dash
Breed: Cur mix
Age: Young Adult
Gender: Male
Description: Dash is a young adult male mixed breed, full grown at about 35-40 pounds, and has the basics down. Already house trained and crate trained, he loves other dogs and is very comfortable with kids also. Dash was rescued from a chain in someone's backyard and has so much to experience still, and he lives each day to its fullest. He is playful, might be a little timid with new people at first, and very snuggly. He enjoys having the attention on him and is pretty clever about finding ways to ask you for it

Name: Dewey
Breed: Pit Bull
Age: Young Adult
Gender: Male
Description: You know those bad Pit Bull stereotypes you have heard? Well, Dewey here puts every one of them to shame with his exceptional personality and sweetness. This boy is set on changing everyone's mind about the big, bad Pit Bull and he's going to do it by kissing and loving on every person he meets. Because that's Dewey. Dewey loves everyone instantly. Dog or person, Dewey thinks whoever he meets is his newest best friend and he's so excited to meet them and start playing and getting cuddles. Speaking of cuddles, Dewey is a champion snuggler. If medals were given out for best snuggler, Dewey would win gold! He loves his walks and playtime and is hoping his forever home will commit to a lot of toys and walks/runs along with the cuddles. He's young still so has energy to burn and a bit of a mischievous streak when he doesn't get his energy out...somehow the kleenex box exploded in the living room while his foster mom was in the shower, Dewey doesn't know what happened but its lucky he was there to keep anything else from spontaneous combustion. :) Dewey is housetrained on a schedule, crates for the workday well, not been a barker, and minds his house manners well. If you're looking for a sweet-as-can-be, energetic buddy to keep you warm on cold nights and active and having fun, consider Dewey. We are all in love with him.

Requirements: Adopter must own home due to breed.

Name: Digit
Breed: Black Lab/ Heeler Cross
Age: Young Adult
Gender: Male
Description: Hi I'm Digit! I'm a 1.5 yr old lovable black lab/blue heeler mix who has a lot of energy, but also likes to relax and cuddle on the couch. I also love to give kisses, some have even called me Gene Simmons. I'm looking for a home with someone who can help me work through my separation anxiety (currently on anti-anxiety medication) and has space for me to run around. If in a fenced in yard I need to be monitored as I can jump a six foot fence! When introduced properly I can interact with another dog, but living with one is too much for me. I need to be in a one dog household. I know sit, stay, off, down, bed, and can walk on a leash well. I've gone to 5 dog class! (Admittedly I had to take a couple twice.) Despite my owners best efforts I do NOT like my crate. They aren't sure how I would do with small children. I do tend to get jealous if I don't have all the attention, so may not do well with young children. If you are capable of working on my anxiety I will be the dog of your dreams and love you forever! **Digit is a courtesy posting and not a part of HHK9**

Requirements: Experience with separation anxiety. Single dog. Adopter must own home

Name: Evy
Breed: Chocolate Lab
Age: Adult
Gender: Female
Description: Evy has about every strike in the adoption book against her...middle aged, a little chunky, not very eye catching, an old, healed leg injury causing an occasional gimp to her step, and came into rescue with heartworm (treated and healing well).  Now that we've listed all her strikes against her, let us tell you why within 5 minutes of meeting her you're going to want her anyways.  In short, she is incredible.  Evy is amazing with people.  She has endless tolerance and patience.  She stepped off a long transport ride up to MN, was put in another car for a long ride, and then immediately in the bathtub to wash the filth of her...and in the bath she wiggled and scratched herself against the hands petting her and passed out kisses.  There are not many dogs with that level of tolerance and patience.  Evy adores the kids though she tends to be a better snuggle buddy than a playmate, she will happily vacuum up their crumbs, share their popcorn on movie nights, and be the best secret keeper they could ever ask for.  Evy is excellent with other dogs and cats though prefer low-key pets like herself rather than the pesky puppies up in her face.  Even still, the puppy jumps on her and she just sighs and lets him without so much as a growl.  Evy is working on her housetraining but was previously an outside dog so the house is newer to her.  She crates quietly for the workday but likely doesn't need it once her housetraining is finished up.  She loves dog beds, walks, and being with her people.  If a quiet, mellow, gentle middle-aged girl who loves to snuggle sounds like your kind of girl, Evy would love you to email us to set up a meeting.  Be warned though, she steals hearts!

Name: Faber
Breed: Heinz 57
Age: Adult
Gender: Male
Description: Faber is a very mellow, laid back, go with the flow 7 year old male mixed breed who came into the shelter as a stray, and his easy going ways endeared him to everyone there. He is gentle with kids, cats and other dogs, house trained, will politely crate but is also good left gated in a kitchen. He loves walks and walks nicely on the leash, and at about 45-50 pounds is a nice size. Faber looks like he's had it rough before, but he sure adjusted to house dog life well, and is a sweet companion dog. He has been used to a home with a yard so would do best in a house with yard space and walks.

Name: Flynn
Breed: American Bulldog Cross
Age: Young Adult
Gender: Male
Description: Flynn is a young adult male American Bulldog mix, maybe with Pointer?, and he is an outgoing, friendly, happy dog. He loves the company of other dogs and enjoys being out and about, meeting people. He thrives with daily walks, loves off leash play time in the country, and is a perfect cuddle companion inside. Flynn is house trained and crate trained. Part of his breed mix is being protective of his home, so he does need an adopter with breed experience and although he is able to calmly greet visitors, when the activity level rises his anxiety rises, so a home with no children and an adopter who will put him away when little kids come over is needed. This is not a dog who is going to seek out kids to be aggressive to, but one who doesn't do well with a gaggle of kids running around the house. He's a goofy, happy, very loving dog who adored the little girl he lived with, but did not do well with groups of kids over. He loves car rides, the park, and playing with toys.

Requirements: Home with yard space. No kids.

Name: Hamsters
Breed: Syrian Hamsters
Age: Babies
Gender: Female & Male
Description: Over Christmas break, a gorgeous Syrian hamster made her way into our hearts. 16 days after we got her, she unexpectedly had 10 adorable little babies. These babies are now about 6 and 1/2 weeks old and are looking for new homes. They have been held since their eyes opened and absolutely love people and attention. Every time someone approaches the cage, they all run over and ask to come out. They're used to human contact and are by far more social and loving than the hamsters you find at pet stores. They have a variety of personalities, but overall, they all crave love and interaction. I will be a bit specific about homes they go to because all of them have nestled their way into my heart and I want them to go to the best homes possible. I am hoping people who are interested either have had hamsters in the past or have basic knowledge of them and are willing to learn and do research. They are sweet and beyond adorable.

Name: Hedwig
Breed: Shepherd/ Husky Cross
Age: Adult
Gender: Female
Description: Hedwig is an adorable husky/shepherd mix who came to us from down south. Her and her sister Minerva came into the pound down there severely undersocialized. Her and a few other dogs had lived their lives in an outdoor pen, and had no idea how to interact with people or live in a house before coming into rescue. Since coming into foster care, Hedwig has been learning just how much fun life is. She has learned that dog beds are the best place to lay, that toys are so much fun to play with - and that nylabones are the best things EVER (in her mind at least)! She is fostered with other dogs and cats and does well with both, though she is more of a hang out buddy than a play mate. With people she is a little slower to show her trust, but patience, treats, and a few kind words are enough to make her tail start to wag and the goofy grin to come out. And then you get to see her puppy-like enthusiasm while she tosses her toy and rolls around on the carpet like it's the most amazing invention. Once you've earned her trust, Hedwig will give you her everything. Hedwig is house trained on a schedule, meaning she will hold it but doesn't know how to ask. She is crate trained, and views it as her safe place (she will go there to nap or hang out on her own). Hedwig does need to go to a home with another dog and a fenced yard.

Requirements: Fenced yard. No kids. Another dog in the home.

Description: Helix is an adult Chocolate Lab with a heart of gold, a passion for people, and a total Lab personality.  Lab lovers, you will fall head over heels for this guy.  He is charming, smart, and the whole package when it comes to good dogs.  Helix is excellent with kids and has endless patience for their antics.  Sure his tail smacks the little ones in the face sometimes but he's quick to turn around with kisses and love too.  Helix is excellent with dogs, fine with cats, and has the typical "love everyone" Lab mentality.  He fails as a watch dog but he is golden as a best friend.  Helix is learning to play with toys and loves them.  He is working on his housetraining and picking it up very quickly.  He is crated for the workday and does well.  He was previously an outside dog and he is loving life in the house as a member of the family.  This boy is outstanding. He has an old injury to his left eye that causes it to be milky and he cannot see out of it, but it doesn't effect him in the least.

Kay enjoys other dogs and playtime, and being young needs more training, but she's smart and picks it up quickly. Kay is fostered down south and coming to us end of March, so available shortly after. Kay is extra responsive to training and one of the smartest puppies her foster has seen.

She did come to us heartworm positive, which is being treated. Kona is used to living with kids, dogs, and cats, and is house trained. Kona loves walks and car rides, and has an easy going attitude with meeting new people and other pets. Kona has permanent worry wrinkles on her face that are absolutely adorable.

Name: Lilo
Breed: Rottweiler
Age: Young Adult
Gender: Female
Description: Lilo is a stunning young adult Rottweiler. Initially wary of new people, she warms up quickly with a treat and some kind words and quickly becomes a loyal, loving companion. She is smart and learns things quickly with treats and some praise. She is housetrained with a schedule but needs someone to take her out rather than waiting for her to ask. She crates nicely for the workday but needs a home with no shared walls as she likes to express her displeasure with being in the crate when she'd rather be with her people. Lilo is good with other dogs after a slow introduction but gets nervous with dogs up in her face too quickly so isn't a dog for a dog park/daycare. She loves the other large breed dog at her foster home and would play for hours with him. She is not good with cats or smaller animals. Lilo loves to go for walks/runs and once her energy is out will happily relax by her people's feet. Rottie lovers will fall hard for this girl! She would be best with a fenced in yard.

Requirements: No cats. Fenced yard preferred.

Name: Liza (Adoption Pending!)
Breed: Newfie/ Retriever Cross
Age: Adult
Gender: Female
Description: Liza is a 5 year old female Newfy/Retriever mix who came to the shelter very skinny, and a little shy-- life has not been kind to her. She maintains a dignified, gentle, very loving personality in spite of what her past was. Gentle with cats, good with other dogs, tolerant of kids, Liza is an easy going dog who doesn't ask for much. Patience as she builds some confidence, a little help with learning the house training in a new place, and a peaceful home would be wonderful. She is used to yard space and needs someone to show her the ropes of what to do, either a person or a dog. She's worth every second of investment. Right now she is 70 pounds but underweight.

Name: Lollipop
Breed: Shepherd/ Chow Cross
Age: Adult
Gender: Female
Description: Lollipop is a sweet shepherd/chow mix with manners, good looks, smarts, and a lot of love to share with a forever family. She is housetrained, crates for the workday well in a reinforced/sturdy kennel (she can escape the regular ones), minds her manners well in the house, gets along well with dogs, and is good with older kids. Lollie has one drawback...she's terrified of storms. However, she does very well when given a prescription anti-anxiety medication shortly before a storm and is given a safe place in the basement to call her own during stormy weather but needs a home committed to this otherwise she is destructive. Lollie loves to go for walks, loves to hang out in the yard (fenced), but is overall a calmer more laid-back girl. She is just about the perfect dog and we can't say enough good things about this little love. Lollie is about 4 years old, 50 lbs.

Requirements: Home willing to work with the storm anxiety

Name: Luki
Breed: Black Lab
Age: Mature Adult
Gender: Female
Description: Luki is a 7 year old female Lab mix with a lot of heart, a curious nature, energy for walks and playtime, a strong hunting drive to keep the yard free of critters, and a sense of humor. This dog makes us laugh all the time. Luki was dumped at a high kill shelter and luckily that grey muzzle was taken in by a foster home. When she got here, we realized she also has cataracts, likely had them since a juvenile, so very used to making her way around with them. She does the steps carefully, sometimes bumps into things, but it sure doesn't slow her down. Luki loves other dogs, is well trained in the house, not a chewer or barker. She would thrive in a home with a fenced in yard for her, and she sure loves toys. Luki does not do well with cats. She transitions hard, so her next home needs a very patient adopter willing to hang in there with her for a couple days of pacing and crying as she adjusts... she really bonds hard, and given a few days will easily change that bond to you. She's worth the couple days wait.

Requirements: Fenced yard preferred. No cats.

Name: Midnight
Breed: Black Lab Cross
Age: Young Adult
Gender: Male
Description: Midnight is a young adult male Black Lab mix who has been patiently waiting in a pound to be a chosen dog. His prior owners never came for him after animal control picked him up patiently waiting by a school, and he hopefully wags his tail at every visitor who walks through animal control. A caring volunteer asked our rescue to take him, and we agree he deserves a chance. He is great with kids and dogs, and while we don't know how he is with cats, he's so passive and gentle we suspect just fine. He is medium energy and smart, eager to do the right thing so he can have some praise. Nobody has spent time training or loving him, and he is so looking forward to someone choosing him who will. Since he came from a rural area, we are looking for a home with yard space for him rather than an apartment, since he's used to some space outside.

Requirements: Home with yard

Name: Milo
Breed: Coonhound
Age: Adult
Gender: Male
Description: Meet Milo! He is a four year old, 85 pound coon-hound. Milo is a sweet, sensitive, smart boy. He loves to play and be active. He gets along with most other dogs, but does not do well in a large group play setting (dog parks are usually fine, doggie day care is too overwhelming). Milo has not been used for hunting, but no doubt would be an amazing hunting dog (witnessed by the number of squirrels he has caught). He currently does not have a dog-sibling, but would love it if he did. Milo struggles with anxiety and does not do well with a lot of transition and unpredictability. He would do best in a quiet home with NO KIDS. He is a good watch dog and protective of his space, and makes a great security system. The other side of this is, it takes him some time to settle when new folks come to the home. Milo has responded well to training and can sit, stay, lay down and shake a paw. He is in good health, neutered, and up to date on all shots. We would love to stay connected to Milo and still be a part of his life. If his future adopted parents were willing, we would love to take care of him if they were to go out of town and help out when needed.  Milo is a courtesy posting and not a part of Heading Home K9 Rescue.

Requirements: Quieter, Adult home. No cats

Name: Minerva
Breed: Shepherd/ Husky Cross
Age: Adult
Gender: Female
Description: Minerva is a sweet, shy gal who came to us from down south. She and her sister Minerva came into the pound severely undersocialized. She was terrified of life - and when you got her out of the kennel run she turned into a lump, refusing to move. She had lived her life in an outdoor pen, and had no idea how to live in a house when she came into rescue. To say that's changed since coming into foster care is an understatement! Still shy yes, but happy! Treats have been the key to her success, she'll do just about anything for a couple of Bil-Jacs. She has been learning how to play, what toys are for, and how's it's okay to sleep on the comfy dog beds. Every day she comes out of her shell a little more, and her personality shines. Silly, playful, and puppy-like, it's obvious she is trying to make up for lost time. Minerva is fostered with other dogs and cats and does fine with both. With her submissive personality, she would prefer a calmer canine companion to hang out with rather than roughhouse. Minerva is house trained on a schedule, meaning she will hold it but doesn't know how to ask to go out yet. She is kennel trained, and will dive into it on command. We do require her to go to a home with another dog and a fenced in yard. She's great with all sizes of dogs, and even cats, but no young children because of how much their movements would frighten her. Minerva may be a dog that takes a little bit of work, but she's worth it. You can see her gratitude with every gentle lick, with every happy expression you catch on her face when she's realized how much fun something is. Sharing her successes and triumphs is a reward like no other. If you have a little time, a little patience, and a few kind words, Minerva will make you smile every day that she is with you.

Requirements: Fenced yard. No kids. Another dog in the home.

Name: Nola
Breed: Black Lab Cross
Age: Young Adult
Gender: Female
Description: Nola is a high-energy, ball-crazy, happy Lab mix. She takes loving the tennis ball and loving fetch to a whole new level. She would play fetch until she collapsed or your arm fell off, whichever came first.  This girl needs a job or a highly active home to keep her mind and body busy. She is young, needs some manners taught but she is sharp minded and so eager to work and please her owner. She learns things in a flash. Nola is excellent with other dogs, cannot be placed with cats or small animals, and best suited to a home with older kids only because of her energy level and lack of awareness when she is chasing a ball or playing (she WILL knock people over!). She shows absolutely no aggression whatsoever, just really doesn’t understand to be gentle with the little ones. Nola would excel in a home who wanted to do a dog sport with her…dock diving or flyball would be absolutely right up her alley but she would likely do equally well in hunting or agility with training. However, she first and foremost would like to be a companion. Nola is about 1-2 years old, 50 lbs.

Requirements: No cats. Home dedicated to tiring her out physically and mentally

Name: Paisley
Breed: Anatolian Shepherd/ German Shepherd Cross
Age: Young Adult
Gender: Female
Description: Paisley is a big puppy in both size and in personality! Initially a little wary with new experiences, as her shyness sheds off, out comes a puppy ready for adventure! She loves to run in the yard (fenced), loves to play, and recently discovered just how much fun toys are. Paisley is good with other large dogs and is absolutely in her element wrestling and running around with them. She would love a home with another active dog who can show her the ropes. Paisley seems to have been an outdoor dog before and many things are new to her….being in the house, walking on a leash, meeting people, etc. She needs a home with the patience and experience to continue her training and build her confidence in new situations. She is housetrained on a schedule and crates well for the workday.. If you have the patience and time for continued training and confidence building and are looking for a big, active puppy to join in on your adventures, Paisley is your girl!

Description: Paisley is a Lab/Terrier mix, about 35 pounds at 10 months of age. This sweet girl very much enjoys kids, other dogs, and making new friends. She is doing very well with house training and crates for the workday. Paisley learns routines well, and loves to be trained/worked with. She is reliable off leash once attached and loves walks. She is learning basic commands from her foster and loves to go wading as well. Paisley would do best with a fenced yard and an already house trained canine companion to show her the ropes. She loves to cuddle with the kids, play with toys, and be a companion.

Name: Pirate
Breed: Husky Malamute Cross
Age: Young Adult
Gender: Male
Description: Pirate is a one-eyed, fluffball of a husky/malamute mix with a true passion for life. This dog loves everything life has to offer…toys, treats, swimming, walks/runs, playing in the yard, other dogs, and then happily curling up on a fluffy dog bed to chill with his people. He is a high-energy dog, typical husky so needs an active home who will tire him out physically and mentally. He loves to learn tricks and commands when there are treats involved otherwise, typical husky, he’s hit or miss depending on what he wants to do. He’s stubborn, silly, and has a naughty streak a mile long that makes his foster family laugh. His cute face saves him from trouble every time though. Pirate is working on his housetraining, crates for the workday but needs a shove to get him in there, and is working on learning how to behave in a house. He is excellent with other dogs, needs a home without cats or small animals, and is best suited to a home with older, respectful kids who will take an active role in his training otherwise he tends to be too bossy and pushy with them. He does require a fenced yard due to his sight limitations. Pirate came into the pound with a dead eyeball caused by severe lens wasting that is likely the result of genetics. His other eye is a good health at this point and he can see fine, just has a minor cataract that is being treated, but because of the potential for the eye issues to be genetic, he may lose sight in the other eye someday as well. Pirate is hoping for an owner who will commit to him and love him no matter what the future holds for him.

Requirements: No cats. Fenced yard.

Name: Rex
Breed: Pit Bull/ Shepherd Cross
Age: Young Adult
Gender: Male
Description: Rex is a young male Pit Bull/Shepherd mix who wears his heart on his sleeve. A sweet, gentle boy this guy hands out kisses and cuddles to everyone he comes across. He’s never once met a stranger, only his newest best friends. He sure has a lot going for him…housetrained, smart, knows basic obedience and a few tricks, minds his manners well in the house, and has incredible social skills. Rex is a social butterfly, happy to play with every dog he meets and greet every person. He is excellent with other dogs and loves to play with them. He’s active and playful without being hyper and is happy to relax on the couch after he gets a long walk and some playtime. Rex does have a downside…he has pretty severe separation anxiety. What that means in a home for Rex is that we are looking for someone who is home more often than not, willing to invest in a sturdy, reinforced crate for when they are gone, and someone who is willing to continue the training to minimize the anxiety when they leave. This is a tall order, we know, but Rex is extremely worth it. He has one of the kindest hearts we’ve ever come across in rescue. He is everyone’s best friend. Photo courtesy of Ciao Bella Photography.

Requirements: An adopter who is home home more often than not, willing to invest in an "indestructible" kennel, and will continue training for the separation anxiety.

Name: Ria
Breed: Shepherd Cross
Age: Young Adult
Gender: Female
Description: Ria is a young adult Shepherd mix with a soft personality, a serious side that makes training her a breeze, and an equally silly side that's always up for some fun! She came into a shelter down south with her puppies. All her puppies were adopted but no one wanted her and she narrowly escaped being euthanized. We sure are glad her life was spared and she got to come up here because she is one heck of a nice dog! Ria loves her walks and playtime. She is learning what toys are and is fascinated with them. She is a young girl still at about 1-2 years old so she's got energy to burn but she balances it nicely with a sensible side that knows to mind her manners in the house as well. She is working on her housetraining and picking it up quickly. She crates for the workday though is an expert Houdini at escaping the typical wire/plastic crates. Ria is excellent with other dogs but needs a home without cats (they're far too fun to chase!).

Description: Sandy is a young adult female Lab/Hound mix, a cuddly dog who loves kids and other pets. Kids make her very happy. She is not good with cats or small caged animals, she wants to hunt them. Sandy is house trained, crate trained for the workday, and sleeps on the couch at night. Name: Star
Breed: Black Lab Cross
Age: Mature Adult
Gender: Female
Description: Star is a mature adult Black Lab who acts like a dog much younger than her age would suggest!  She is all about walks, adventures, and having fun with her people.  She has a silly side that comes out when she sees her leash come out for walks or when toys come out.  Yes, show this middle aged lady a toy and watch her turn into an instant puppy!  She is good with older, respectful kids who mind her space...she, like many dogs, isn't a huge fan of hugs or little ones getting up in her business.  Star is well housetrained, crates for the workday well though probably doesn't need it with her great manners, and knows a few basic commands.  She is smart and very food-motivated so training her is a breeze...whoever said old dogs can't learn new tricks clearly never met Star!  Star does not care for other pets so she needs a home who wants her to be their one and only.  She is not a dog to take to the dog park or to bring to a friend's for a doggy playdate, she simply doesn't enjoy the company of other canines or felines.  She would much prefer the peace of her own home as the one and only furry friend and what a devoted friend you have in Star.  It doesn't get much more loving than her happy dance when she sees you or her wiggles of joy for absolutely any scrap of attention paid her way. She radiates love and joy for her family and for all people she meets.

Requirements: No cats. No other dogs. Older kids/adults

Name: Stitch
Breed: Black Lab Cross
Age: Adult
Gender: Male
Description: Stitch is a young Black Lab mix with a passion for fetch!  He is smart and loves to learn...as long as you have a ball in your hand, Stitch will do anything for you. He is housetrained with a schedule, crates for the workday, knows what is appropriate to chew/what isn't, and minds his manners in the house well as long as he gets plenty of exercise. Stitch's biggest hurdle to adoption...he was run over by his owners as a puppy causing a broken hip that's been repaired with FHO surgery but also loss of bladder control. He can only hold his bladder about 4-5 hours max so needs a home with a doggy door, an outdoor setup, or a home willing and able to accommodate his potty needs. Stitch is excellent with other larger dogs, not good with kitties (he thinks they're fun to chase), and better with older kids who can take a role in his training. He would do best in a home who will show him firmly but lovingly that they are the boss otherwise he tries to test the limits a bit (typical teenager!). Stitch wants nothing more than to be loved. He loves to snuggle up on the couch, loves his people, and his favorite place after a nice long game of fetch is right by his foster mom's feet. He is a loving, smart, social Lab who has been waiting for a home for far too long.

Requirements: No cats. No young kids.

Name: Striker
Breed: Pit Bull
Age: Senior

Description: Striker is a 9 year old male Pit Bull who came to rescue after spending 11 months in animal control, which says a lot about his character... not many dogs can maintain a friendly attitude and their sanity after that long in a kennel, but something about him persevered and during that, he charmed everyone he met. Now in a foster home, he is thriving. He loves blankets, lots of them, and is very mellow and relaxed in his crate but behaves himself equally well when left loose. Striker is house trained. His favorite toys are tennis balls, and he plays a mean game of fetch. He's about 60 lbs and is treat motivated which helps with training. He has not been around cats so would do best in a cat free home, and has done well with canine siblings at his foster home.

He would do best in an adult/older chilen home who will firmly and lovingly set rules and boundaries for him. He loves and needs to know what is expected of him otherwise he tries to 'rule the roost'. Name: Ziva
Breed: Shepherd/ Collie Cross
Age: Adult
Gender: Female
Description: Ziva is a sweet, soft-hearted Shepherd mix who is looking for a forever home who understands the meaning of "forever" this time around.   Usually we try to focus on the future and the amazing qualities a dog has (and Ziva has plenty!) but with Ziva being abandoned the way she was turned her whole life and personality upside down. Her owners left her in their house when they moved. Just left her. It broke Ziva’s heart and it has made her terrified to be abandoned again.. She bonded hard and fast to her foster family and is blossoming into a more confident, happy dog every day.  Because of being abandoned, Ziva is quite an anxious dog with change or with new experiences..  What that means is any type of change or new thing, even a small change in her routine or expectation, makes her a ball of nerves and fear expecting the worst.  She is on a low dose of Prozac right now and does VERY well so needs a home willing to continue that as well as providing her the training and predictability she needs.  Ziva needs a person/family with a very stable, predictable home who will show her love and stability without encouraging her anxiety. She thrives on knowing what is expected of her, she loves having rules and boundaries in place and needs a home who is willing and able to balance that with giving her the love and attention she needs. Ziva is tolerant of other dogs but prefers to be your one and only or with a dog who will respect her space.  She is not good with cats. She is housetrained, cratetrained, minds her house manners like a dream, and knows a few basic commands. She is extremely smart and willing to learn anything and everything you would ever want to teach her. She is high energy and loves to play fetch and loves her runs/walks.  In the right home, she settles in nicely and the fear of being abandoned dissipates but she needs a home willing to solidly commit to sticking with her through the transition and through her adjustment.

Requirements: Experienced, stable home required. No cats.

Description: Zoi is a 10 month female Lab/Pit Bull?/Boxer? mix, house trained and crate trained, been very loved and well cared for. She is seeking a new home due to a move. Zoi was raised with kids, is great with other dogs. She is young, so needs an outlet for some puppy energy to go for walks and play, but then is very happy in true bully breed form to come inside and cuddle. She is used to sharing the bed and enjoys the company of people quite a bit. This is a fantastic girl.
