Welcome to Heading Home K9 Rescue!

Did you see a dog that caught your eye? Ready to start the adoption process? Happy to help! Feel free to email the dog's listed contact with any questions you have...the dogs live in our homes with us so we know them very well. Please also download and fill out the preadopt application (Heading Home K9 Rescue Preadopt Application) and email it in to the listed contact for the dog(s) you are interested in. We read through the application, check references, and once approved (we aim for 24-48 hours to approve or deny), we set up a visit with you and the foster home or direct you to an adoption event to meet the dog(s). Fosters are more than happy to answer questions that arise. We all want a good match the first time, and a successful experience for the adopter and the dog.
After meeting, you can choose to outright adopt, or do a foster to adopt, where you complete an extra form and gain a 1-2 week period to see how the dog adjusts, and if the fit between the dog and your home is right. We encourage adopters to give it a MINIMUM of 3 days. Returning a dog before that period means it never had a chance to settle in and show you what the true personality is like. Moving dogs between homes is stressful and not in the dog's best interests. We are here to support you after adoption also, answering questions and helping make the process as positive as we can. We highly recommend you read the tips in this packet (Adopting 101) before bringing your new dog home...it will help greatly ease the transition and make it a positive experience for everyone!

Our adoption fees are non-negotiable and average about $350 which includes their vet work-spay/neuter, vaccinations, heartworm testing (if old enough), and deworming. Often the vet costs far exceed the adoption fee, especially on our special needs dogs. We rely on adoption fees to be able to continue to rescue more dogs in need.

NEXT PET ADOPTION-- Our next pet adoption will be on Sunday July 30th from 12-2 at the Bloomington Chuck and Dons

REMINDER: It is always a good idea to email the contact listed in each dog's bio to find out of s/he will be attending an adoption event before making the drive. Many dogs do not attend the adoption events.

Want to help support the dogs of Heading Home K9 Rescue without ever leaving your house....not even leaving your computer?!--- Check out our Amazon.com wish list here! HEADING HOME DOGS LOOKING FOR HOMES:

Name: Amelia (Adoption Pending!)
Breed: Cattle Dog Cross
Age: Young Adult
Gender: Female
Description: Amelia needs help. This adolescent female 35 pound Cattle Dog/Terrier is losing hope of being chosen. Several weeks ago when she was surrendered to the shelter she was a happy, outgoing, pop up to say hello pup... and now after several weeks of being in a cage there, she is so depressed she barely lifts her head when people pause. If a volunteer brings her outside she comes alive and is playful and happy, and the walk back into her kennel is torture, she is so sad. Amelia is one on our ' hope' list, one we'd love to commit to if we can find a foster or adopter for her here. She is currently in KY and would transport to MN July 23rd. She is known great with kids, dogs, and we can ask the shelter to see how she is with cats. She was previously an outside dog so will need to learn the house training, but she keeps her run clean and works hard to please.

Requirements: No special requirements

You can email kladams4545@gmail.com with questions and for a preadopt application. This dog has been spayed/neutered, vaccinated as age appropriate, tested for heartworm disease if age appropriate, and dewormed.

Name: Ashley
Breed: Lab/ Pit Bull Cross
Age: Young Adult
Gender: Female
Description: Ashley is young, small Pittie/ Lab mix who has seen a lot of life and from what we can tell, not much of it was good before being rescued.  Sweet Ashley is so scared of people and expects the worst.  Someone new reaches for her and she hides behind her dog buddy or she cowers and hits the floor expecting those hands to come at her with pain not love.  No matter how scared, Ashley has never been aggressive or nippy, just shuts down and waits for the hurt to happen and be done.  Ashley has a lot of positives going for her.  She is housetrained at her foster home (though please, expect accidents as she transitions), crates nicely and quietly. adores other dogs, fine with cats, and good with older, respectful kids who understand that rowdy behavior scares her to pieces and know to be gentle.  When she is feeling playful and gets excited she hops around and looks like a puppy for a moment until she second guesses herself and retreats, so there is very much a playful girl hiding in there just waiting to come out! What Ashley needs in a forever home is a home who can commit to providing her with stability, love, training, and lots of patience.  She is what we affectionately refer to as a "project dog". She is looking for a special adopter to take her under their wing and nurse her spirit back to health, to teach her the world is a good place and not something to be feared, and to show her that she has a place in this world even though right now she feels the world is out to hurt her. Ashley needs is a quieter home with a securely fenced yard, preferably another dog to show her the ropes, and a committed foster/adopter who is in it for the long haul with her. Will it be easy?  No. Working with a dog as scared as Ashley will test the limits of your patience and make you want to quit some days.  It is not without its frustrations and it is not easy.  But the first glimpses you see of breakthroughs for her, where she lets her guard down and acts like a dog will make it all worth it.  If you have the experience (or willingness to learn) to help an extremely scared dog blossom and you can promise to commit to her even when you want to give up, please consider Ashley. She is such a kind soul. She deserves to know the world is a safe place.

Requirements: Adopter must own home due to breed mix. Fenced yard. Home committed to providing love, stability, training, and patience.

You can email kladams4545@gmail.com with questions and for a preadopt application. This dog has been spayed/neutered, vaccinated as age appropriate, tested for heartworm disease if age appropriate, and dewormed.

Name: Bane`
Breed: Akita
Age: Adult
Gender: Male
Description: Bane is a stunning Akita who defines the Akita breed…loyal, watchful, a dash of a stubborn streak, and incredibly beautiful. Bane’s tough dog exterior (and his big bark!) hides a soft soul who loves his people beyond measure. Once he bonds, you have a best friend for life. Bane is housetrained on a schedule, crates for the workday (though hates the crate and it’s a bit of a fight to get him in there), and minds his manners well in the house. He is a barker when appropriate so is not suitable to a home with shared walls (apartment, townhome, etc). Bane is an active dog who loves his walks and playtime but settles nicely once he is tired out. He is not good with cats or small animals. He is tolerant of other dogs though would be best in a home as an only dog or with a submissive, female who will respect his space. Like most Akitas, Bane has a stubborn, dominant streak and needs an experienced handler who will firmly, yet lovingly set the rules and boundaries for him. He toes the line perfectly once he knows what is expected of him but he needs a handler who can control a powerful, intelligent dog. Please do your research on this breed before considering adopting Bane, Akitas are fabulous companions in the right home but they are not the dog for everyone. Bane is a beautiful representation of his breed in both looks and temperament.

Requirements: No cats. Experienced Home Required.

You can email laurahhk9@gmail.com with questions and for a preadopt application. This dog has been spayed/neutered, vaccinated as age appropriate, tested for heartworm disease if age appropriate, and dewormed.

Name: Banshee
Breed: German Shepherd
Age: Young Adult
Gender: Female
Description: Banshee is a fun-loving, energetic, wickedly smart Shepherd girl with a passion for fetch and a love of water. That's right, there is nothing this girl loves more than racing through the kiddie pools and ponds with a ball in her mouth and a grin on her face. Banshee is working on her manners with other dogs, not good with cats, and good with older kids who can take an active role in her training. She is working on her housetraining, crates for the workday, and learning her house manners. She appears to have been an outside dog before so the house is very new to her but she's learning how to behave. A home without shared walls is ideal as she likes to sing the song of her people (howl and bark) when she is bored or crated. Banshee loves her people, loves to learn, and is picking up training in a flash. She needs some more training and continued work (leash manners especially leave a lot to be desired!), but her mind is sharp an ready for someone to put the time in to working with her. She is a high energy, high drive dog who needs an outlet for that energy. She would be an absolutely outstanding sport dog (flyball, agility, etc) or running partner.

Requirements: No cats

You can email laurahhk9@gmail.com with questions and for a preadopt application. This dog has been spayed/neutered, vaccinated as age appropriate, tested for heartworm disease if age appropriate, and dewormed.

Name: Blitz
Breed: German Shepherd
Age: Adult
Gender: Male
Description: Blitz is a handsome German Shepherd boy with a love of playing with toys. He is happiest with a ball in his mouth and some space to run around and burn his energy off. Blitz found his way into a local impound the result of lack of training and an open fence gate causing him to chase and bite a child in play. Shepherds are herding breeds after all and he was doing what he thought was all in good fun! He needs a home with no kids due to his size, lack of training, and previous bite. Blitz is housetrained, crates well, minds his manners well in the house, and is working on learning his basic commands. He is a very smart boy and it shows in how quickly he picks things up...he learned he needed to drop the tennis ball and sit for it to be thrown again in about 10 minutes. His last owner loved him and cared for him well but skipped the training and shepherds need both love and training to be successful, well-mannered companions. He would do best in a home with shepherd experience, time to train, and the ability to manage his wild side with training and exercise. He does require a physically fenced yard or a home outside the city with acreage he can be trained to stay on. He is not good with cats and would be best placed as an only dog.

Requirements: Experienced Home Required. No cats. Physically fenced yard or acreage

Name: Boogie
Breed: Boxer Cross
Age: Puppy
Gender: Male
Description: Boogie is a handsome Boxer mix pup who always has a doggy grin on his face and mischief in his eyes. Thank goodness his cute face gets him out of trouble every time! Boogie is a super social, outgoing, never-met-a-stranger puppy who greets every dog and person like they have been best friends forever. He loves toys and when they squeak will jump all 4 paws off the ground in happiness. He is excellent with other dogs, good with cats though will try to play and chase in fun, and loves the kids. Boogie is a typical puppy so prepare for all the work of a puppy--puppy training classes, housetraining, cratetraining, socialization, things getting chewed up, accidents, and puppy mischief. Its balanced quite easily by the fun, snuggles, and play of such a well-started, sweet pup. Boogie is about 3 months old, 20 lbs right now. We have no idea who mom or dad are so size is a best guess but we expect him to be 45-65 lbs as an adult.

Requirements: No special requirements

Name: Bosco
Breed: German Shepherd/ Rottweiler Cross
Age: Adult
Gender: Male
Description: Bosco is a big, handsome 3-4 year old Rottie/Shepherd mix who is loyal, loving, and quite the goofball. He is happiest following his person around for hours on end, finding some funny mischief to get into, and always is ready for a scratch and some love. Bosco came into rescue with serious hip issues that made it difficult for him to lead a normal life. We expected him to need surgery but as it turned out his issues are too severe even for surgery to correct. He has little to no muscle in his back legs making surgery a poor choice.  Bosco is on lifelong pain management, joint supplements, and injections of Adequan (synthetic joint medication). Now this sounds like a pretty poor quality of life, nope, not for Bosco! He is so happy to be pain free for the first time in a long time that he plays like a puppy, he runs, he fetches, he counter surfs (naughty boy!), and is overjoyed for every minute he gets to spend having fun. We don't know what his life holds long term. He might eventually be a surgery candidate, he might not. He might live a shorter life due to the severity of his injuries or he might live a normal lifespan. We simply cannot predict so he needs an adopter who is willing to commit to whatever his life brings and willing and able to emotionally and financially commit to continuing to manage his pain and hips so he can live pain-free. Bosco is excellent with other dogs, adores people of all ages, and has never met a stranger, only new best friends. He does need a cat-free home. He is housetrained, crates well for the workday, loves to chew on bones and toys. (Photo courtesy of Ciao Bella Photography)

Requirements: Medical special needs. No cats

Name: Bounce
Breed: Pit Bull Cross
Age: Adult
Gender: Female
Description: Bounce is a happy, social, loving 3 year old Pittie girl. She found herself at a local impound after she was let unsupervised with a toddler and the toddler sustained a nip/scratch. Bounce was blamed, and she was no longer wanted. Bounce is ready to put the past behind her and is facing her future with her typical happy-go-lucky attitude! She loves other dogs and is fine with cats. She is extremely friendly, loves people, is a champion snuggler, and loves her walks and playtime but equally loves her couch time. She is housetrained (though please expect accidents as she transitions), crates for the workday, and minds her manners as well as any young dog can. Because of the unknown circumstances of the nip on the small child, we are seeking an older child (8+) or adult home for her just as a precaution though we have seen her be absolutely nothing but a complete love. If you are looking for a snuggly, adorable companion to share your home, your couch, and your adventures, please consider Bounce. She will bring so much happiness to your life.

Requirements: Adopter must own home due to breed mix. Kids ages 8+

Name: Bowie
Breed: Yellow Lab Cross
Age: Puppy
Gender: Male
Description: Bowie is a BIG Lab puppy with a heart of gold and an easy going, laid back temperament. A little more on the shy side, he loves to watch things until he is ready to join in the fun. He is a champion snuggler, excellent with other dogs, loves the kids, fine with cats. He is just a big, bumbling ball of love. He loves toys, treats, and is happiest smooshing himself as close to his person as he can possibly get for some love. Bowie is a typical puppy so prepare for all the work of a puppy--puppy training classes, housetraining, cratetraining, socialization, things getting chewed up, accidents, and puppy mischief. Its balanced quite easily by the fun, snuggles, and play of such a well-started, sweet pup. Bowie is about 3 months old, 25 lbs right now. We have no idea who mom or dad are so size is a best guess but we expect him to be 60-80+ lbs as an adult.

Name: Butch
Breed: Black Lab Cross
Age: Adult
Gender: Male
Description: Butch is a male adult black Lab who has spent way too many months in the shelter and is desperate to get out and be part of a family. He is great with the visiting kids, really drawn to them, plays nicely with the other dogs. They did a ' cat test' at the shelter and he showed interest and curiosity along with a healthy respect for them. He does well keeping his kennel clean so house training should be easy, and he crates well. Butch is a great dog who needs someone to discover him and make him part of the family. He is used to rural life so a home with yard space is ideal, or someone who walks.

Requirements: No special requirements

Name: Cato
Breed: Shepherd/ Rottie/ Terrier Cross
Age: Young Adult
Gender: Male
Description: Cato is a 40 lb, 2 year old mixed up three-legged mutt who will look like a puppy forever.  He is determined as well to never leave his puppy joy behind either!  This sweet boy can find fun in anything.  He loves playing with other dogs, loves toys, loves to go out and about meeting people, and then happily collapses for a nap on a dog bed once his energy is out.  He is housetrained on a schedule and minds his manners well in the house (though occasional things still fall victim to being chewed!).  Cato's biggest hurdle for finding a home and what has kept him in rescue for over a year is his separation anxiety.  He needs an extra sturdy, reinforced crate to contain him when his people leave as well as a home experienced (or willing to learn!) in managing and working with separation anxiety behaviors.  Cato loves his walks and playtime, missing a leg doesn't slow him down in the slightest, and would love an active person/family to pick him as theirs.  (Photo courtesy of Ciao Bella Photography)

Requirements: Home committed to training and working with the separation anxiety.

Name: Daisy
Breed: Dalmatian Cross
Age: Young Adult
Gender: Female
Description: Daisy is a young adult female Dalmation mix, looks to be Dalmation/Pointer, and she is a sweetheart. She's good with kids, dog and ignored the office cat in favor of more pets being doled out. She can be a little shy at first but always soft and sweet. Daisy is a people pleaser and works hard to watch you and predict what you want from her. She is a very nice dog who works hard to make you happy.

Requirements: Home with yard space

Name: Dale (Adoption Pending!)
Breed: Aussie/ Dane Cross
Age: Adult
Gender: Male
Description: Dale is an adult male Aussie/Dane? mix, weight wise about 75 pounds but this guy has some long legs. Sadly surrendered due to a move, his owner held him and cried for an hour when she had to surrender him to the shelter. He's been loved. He's a very steady, happy, outgoing and playful dog who does well with kids, cats and dogs. He is crate trained and caught onto the house training after a few days at his foster home. He has the potential to make a great family dog, he has a lot of patience and love for kids and their play.

Name: Dewey
Breed: Pit Bull
Age: Young Adult
Gender: Male
Description: You know those bad Pit Bull stereotypes you have heard? Well, Dewey here puts every one of them to shame with his exceptional personality and sweetness. This boy is set on changing everyone's mind about the big, bad Pit Bull and he's going to do it by kissing and loving on every person he meets. Because that's Dewey. Dewey loves everyone instantly. Dog or person, Dewey thinks whoever he meets is his newest best friend and he's so excited to meet them and start playing and getting cuddles. Speaking of cuddles, Dewey is a champion snuggler. If medals were given out for best snuggler, Dewey would win gold! He loves his walks and playtime and is hoping his forever home will commit to a lot of toys and walks/runs along with the cuddles. He's young still so has energy to burn and a bit of a mischievous streak when he doesn't get his energy out...somehow the kleenex box exploded in the living room while his foster mom was in the shower, Dewey doesn't know what happened but its lucky he was there to keep anything else from spontaneous combustion.:) No cats for this boy please, they're just too much fun to chase.  Dewey is housetrained on a schedule, crates for the workday well, not been a barker, and minds his house manners well. He does require a physically fenced yard due to some "Houdini" moves when tied out. If you're looking for a sweet-as-can-be, energetic buddy to keep you warm on cold nights and active and having fun, consider Dewey. We are all in love with him.

Requirements: Adopter must own home due to breed. No cas. Fenced yard

Name: Finnick
Breed: German Shepherd
Age: Young Adult
Gender: Male
Description: Finnick is a silly, exhuberant German Shepherd who came into the pound a complete mess…emaciated to the point he couldn’t stand, sick, covered in mange and infection. A few months with some food, TLC, and good vet care and this boy is a different dog both inside and out. Gone is the dog who was too weak to move and here is the puppy who can play for hours and hours on end and makes a fantastic running partner! An active home who wants an active pup to join in their adventures would be perfect for him. Finn is working on his housetraining, crates for the workday well (though can be a bit vocal about his desire to go with you!), and is working on his house manners. Given the neglect he suffer, he likely never got to enjoy being a puppy so is making up for lost time. He is a BIG perpetual puppy! He loves other dogs and would be an excellent canine companion and playmate. He is not good with cats. Finn needs some training, needs to gain some weight and fill out still, but with a little polishing this boy is going to shine.

Requirements: No cats.

Name: Girly
Breed: Cattle Dog/ Corgi Cross
Age: Adult
Gender: Female
Description: Girly is an adult female Cattle Dog/Corgi mix, previously a feral dog whose life consisted of making sure her babies were safe and fed, finding shelter, and finding food. However, deep inside Girly, she wants to be a pet, so she allowed herself to be caught and has spent the past 3 months in foster care gaining confidence and learning how to be a pet. She is learning the house training, crates just fine, and is good with other dogs. She would do best in a home with a fenced yard ( securely fenced) and experience with shy dogs. She's full grown at about 35 pounds, still lap dog sized. We see daily progress and know what an amazing little companion she'll be.

Requirements: Securely fenced yard. Experience with shy dogs

Name: Hedwig
Breed: Shepherd/ Husky Cross
Age: Adult
Gender: Female
Description: Hedwig is a shy shepherd/ husky mix who lived a life of neglect before coming into rescue.  Her whole life was a filthy, outdoor pen with numerous other dogs and very little people interaction.  Hedwig is learning all the fun of being in the house, being around people, and being a loved member of the family now!  She is shy, people frighten her, but she is getting braver by the day and more social. She loves to give hand kisses and licks to show her love and she has the best happy dance ever when she sees someone she loves.  Fast movements and loud/angry voices still send her hiding to her kennel or retreating as far away as she can, but she is never aggressive and she belly crawls over for love once she knows she is safe still.  She absolutely loves the comforts of dog beds, the fun of bones to chew on, and tennis balls to halfheartedly chase.  Hedwig is excellent with other dogs and needs a confident dog in her home to show her the ropes and fine with cats.  She is working on her housetraining and crates for the workday well.  She needs a home who knows she isn't going to trust and love instantly, a home who is willing to win her over with treats, time, and patience, and a home who knows that all the hard work they'll have to put in at the beginning to earning her trust will be well repaid in kisses and tail wags once she knows she is home and loved.  Hedwig requires a physically fenced yard, another dog in the home, and an adult home.

Requirements: Fenced yard. Adult home with another dog..

He is a calm leader, very easy going and adaptable, and excellent with people and other pets. He has been Isaac's leader during his time in rescue and enjoys the company of another dog. He is doing well with the house training, crates for the workday, loves walks and toys and jumping up to be picked up. His outgoing and charming nature draw people to him like magnets.

Name: Isaac
Breed: Terrier/ Heeler Cross
Age: Adult
Gender: Male
Description: Isaac is a 20-pound adult ( 4-5 years) male Rat Terrier/Cattle dog mix who came to the shelter totally blind. Even in that scary, loud, unfamiliar place he was sweet and gentle and didn't let the blindness stop him from finding the front of his kennel and standing up waiting to be petted by passerby. Isaac is good with other dogs and sort of uses them to help him find his place and routine. Being blind is one of the worst disabilities for a homeless dog to have, as they are very hard to find adopters for. He will need an adopter committed to leashing every time he is outside unfenced, teaching him the house training in a new place, and being patient as he uses his nose and ears to learn the world. He plays with toys, loves treats, enjoys walks and loves to be held.

Requirements:Patience for a special needs dog. Ideally another dog in the home

Name: Kiko
Breed: Black Lab/ Pit Bull Cross
Age: Adult
Gender: Male
Description: Kiko is a 5 year old Lab mix (perhaps with some bully breed in there. We aren't sure) surrendered to rescue after his barn home closed down and he (and his owners) were left homeless. He has been well loved his whole life and it shows in how social, friendly, and well-adjusted he is. Kiko does have some neurological damage that have resulted in him being mostly blind. He has a small amount of vision out of his right eye that helps him navigate and see large objects. While this to us humans seems like a huge obstacle, to Kiko its just who he is and he navigates his world nicely once he is used to it. Sure there's some running into things and stairs in the dark are a no-go, but even when startled he has been nothing but sweet and gentle. Kiko lives for attention and pets. He would happily let you pet him until your arm fell off and still be begging for 5 more minutes of loving. He is good with other dogs (though prefers them laid back like himself), fine with cats, birds, and livestock. He is working on his housetraining, crates well for the workday, and is learning the house manners after having been a previously outdoor dog. Kiko does require a physically fenced yard for his own safety.

Requirements: Fenced yard.

Description: Larry is a little goofy, always happy mixed up mutt boy with a total hero worship on the other dogs. Never mind that they are 10x his size, he follows them around and copies whatever they do. He is a sweet, social puppy with everyone. He is used to kids, other dogs, and cats. He thinks the cats are fun to chase and play with which not all cats agree with but he's convinced they love him. Larry is a good blend of loving to snuggle and loving to play. He is a typical puppy so prepare for all the work of a puppy--puppy training classes, housetraining, cratetraining, socialization, things getting chewed up, accidents, and puppy mischief. Its balanced quite easily by the fun, snuggles, and play of such a well-started, sweet pup. Larry is about 2-3 months old, 10 lbs right now. We have no idea who mom or dad are so size is a best guess but we expect him to be 30-50 lbs as an adult.

Name: Lexa
Breed: Malamute/ Cattle Dog Cross
Age: Adult
Gender: Female
Description: Lexa is a gorgeous 6 month old Alaskan Malamute/Australian Cattle dog cross. This girl is everything you would expect from a cross of these two breeds. She is energetic, smart, stubborn and opinionated, and she loves to talk. She is very much a puppy still, so needs someone who is up for the time and training that comes along with owning a very large, very active puppy. She is house broken on a schedule, and working on her crate training. She would do best in a home who is knowledgeable in dog training (she is not going to be a good fit for first time owners) and she would greatly benefit from obedience training. Both of her breeds take someone who very active, and able to spend the time needed to properly train her. She needs work on her manners, sometimes she just forgets herself, in true puppy fashion. She would do best in a home with younger, larger breed dogs and kids 6-8 years old and up (depending on comfortable they are around dogs), as she is a bit too much for smaller dogs and young children, though she is not at all aggressive, just boisterous. She would probably do ok with cats who are very dog savvy, but she will likely chase them if they run. At only 6 months old she is the size of your average adult Lab, so she is going to be a very large dog. Anyone who is interested in Lexa will need to do research on what it takes to own both of her breeds, as they are not the easiest dogs, and thrive when their mind and body are kept busy. She loves everyone she meets, loves to play fetch, and loves going to the park. She is very eager to learn and she just needs that just right family/environment in order to thrive. With the proper training, love, and care, she is going to make someone a fantastic addition to their family.

Requirements: Dog savvy cats, kids 6-8 years old and up (depending on how comfortable they are around dogs),  adopters with prior experience with large breed young dogs. Must be a home owner as she is not an apartment dog.

Name: Lollipop
Breed: Shepherd/ Chow Cross
Age: Adult
Gender: Female
Description: Lollipop is a sweet shepherd/aussie type mix with manners, good looks, smarts, and a lot of love to share with a forever family. She is housetrained, crates for the workday well in a reinforced/sturdy kennel (she can escape the regular ones), minds her manners well in the house, gets along well with dogs, and is good with older kids. Lollie has one drawback...she's terrified of storms. She does very well when given a prescription anti-anxiety medication shortly before a storm and is given a safe place in the basement in her crate to call her own during stormy weather but needs a home committed to this otherwise she is destructive. Lollie loves to go for walks and would be happiest in a home that would walk her daily.  She is an overall more mellow girl who loves her yard time, hanging out with her people, and comfy dog beds. She is just about the perfect dog and we can't say enough good things about this little love. Lollie is about 5 years old, 50 lbs.

Requirements: Home willing to work with the storm anxiety

Name: Lucky
Breed: Pit Bull Cross
Age: Young Adult

Description: Lucky is a 35 pound young adult female Pit Bull mix who always has a look on her face as though she's waiting to hear what adventure is next. Outgoing, always happy, friendly, she loves to play and is excellent with other dogs and people of all ages. Previously an outside dog, she is learning the house training, and crates for the workday. She'd thrive in an active home wanting an playful young dog. She has a permanent scar down her back from chemical burns from a cheap flea prevention that burned her skin. It doesn't hurt, and doesn't affect her at all. She also had a fracture on her pelvis below the hip socket that we will not be fixing as it has healed and does not affect her mobility nor cause pain She can still run like the wind and leap like a gazelle. Lucky is available after May 6th. She has not been with cats that we know of.

Name: Luki
Breed: Black Lab
Age: Mature Adult
Gender: Female
Description: Luki is a 7 year old female Lab mix with a lot of heart, a curious nature, energy for walks and playtime, a strong hunting drive to keep the yard free of critters, and a sense of humor. This dog makes us laugh all the time. Luki was dumped at a high kill shelter and luckily that grey muzzle was taken in by a foster home. When she got here, we realized she also has cataracts, likely had them since a juvenile, so very used to making her way around with them. She does the steps carefully, sometimes bumps into things, but it sure doesn't slow her down. Luki loves other dogs, is well trained in the house, not a chewer or barker. She would thrive in a home with a fenced in yard for her, and she sure loves toys. Luki does not do well with cats. She transitions hard, so her next home needs a very patient adopter willing to hang in there with her for a couple days of pacing and crying as she adjusts... she really bonds hard, and given a few days will easily change that bond to you. She's worth the couple days wait.

Requirements: Fenced yard preferred. No cats.

Name: Magic
Breed: Aussie/ Cattle Dog Cross
Age: Adult
Gender: Female
Description: Magic is urgently in need of the right foster or adopter. Previously a stray, this gentle and quiet girl was obviously someones house dog before, as she is well house trained and quiet in the crate. She loves dog beds. Magic is currently in a less than ideal foster as she is not good with cats, and the only open foster has cats so she is spending a lot of time crated. Magic is gentle with kids, not a barker, and very easy to live with. She is tolerant of other dogs after showing her teeth at first meet to let them know she likes her space, then she ignores them. Magic came to rescue with hip dysplasia so badly she has a tough time walking far, and steps are very very hard for her, so a home with limited steps are ideal. She also has a mammary lump next to her spay and at her age, we are choosing to not find out if its cancerous or not. Sweet Magic needs a foster or adopter willing to bring her home knowing she likely only has a year or two and willing to shower her with love for that time. She's about 10-11 years old and 35 pounds, a mix of Cattle dog and Corgi we suspect.

Requirements: No cats. Limited steps

Name: Malachi
Breed: Black Lab/ Golden Retriever Cross
Age: Adult
Gender: Male
Description: Malachi is a young adult male Lab cross who packs a lot of heart and fun into his  65 pounds.  He is very friendly, loves other dogs and people, and loves to play- tennis balls are a favorite. He also loves tug, playing chase, and snuggle time. Malachi is currently fostered with a runner and he loves going with her on runs as well as walks. He likes brushing, and storms don't bother him. He's one of the rare souls who is unfazed by chaos...he is comfortable in a crowd and enjoys being praised for all the good things he does. Malachi has learned several commands and is well house trained and crate trained.   He does like to chase small critters outside, so does need a tall fence or a tie out when outside in addition to daily walks or runs. This fantastic dog is going to make a perfect companion. He would prefer a home with yard space and an active owner, and he has not been around cats.

Name: Nola
Breed: Black Lab Cross
Age: Young Adult
Gender: Female
Description: Nola is a high-energy, ball-crazy, happy Lab mix. She takes loving the tennis ball and loving fetch to a whole new level. She would play fetch until she collapsed or your arm fell off, whichever came first.  This girl needs a job or a highly active home to keep her mind and body busy. She is young, needs some manners taught but she is sharp minded and so eager to work and please her owner. She learns things in a flash. Nola is excellent with other dogs, cannot be placed with cats or small animals, and best suited to a home with older kids only because of her energy level and lack of awareness when she is chasing a ball or playing (she WILL knock people over!). She shows absolutely no aggression whatsoever, just really doesn’t understand to be gentle with the little ones. Nola would excel in a home who wanted to do a dog sport with her…dock diving or flyball would be absolutely right up her alley but she would likely do equally well in hunting or agility with training. However, she first and foremost would like to be a companion. Nola is about 1-2 years old, 50 lbs.

Requirements: No cats. Home dedicated to tiring her out physically and mentally

Name: Oakley
Breed: Belgian Malinois
Age: Young Adult
Gender: Male
Description: Oakley is a young adult, Belgian Malinois who has seen a lot in his short life. Quick movements, hands reaching towards him sends him to the ground expecting the worst and belly crawling away to avoid being hurt. Give him a few weeks to settle in, build up trust, and gain some confidence and you have yourself a total puppy of a dog who loves to run, play, fetch, swim, and have a blast. He is the stereotypical super smart, high energy Malinois. He is still extremely nervous outside his comfort zone and with new people so looking for a home who will do some serious confidence building and training to show him that the world is a safe place and new people are not to be feared and who wants a high energy dog to train and have fun with. Oakley is excellent with other large breed dogs and loves to play with them once he knows them. Oakley is working on his housetraining, crates for the workday, and is learning to mind his manners in the house which he does fairly well at as long as his energy is burned out. He would be best in an experienced, adult home who will continue to train and socialize him properly. He does require a physically fenced yard. (Photo courtesy of CiaoBella Photography)

Name: Odessa

Description: Odessa is a middle aged female German Shepherd girl who came into rescue in sad shape. She is thin, sores on her body from lying on concrete, saggy boobs from many litters, and missing hair from living in filth. Luckily some vet care, some good food, and a bath have her on the road to recovery, although she'll always be a little droopy underneath. Odessa is a very patient, laid back, friendly and easy dog. She got very comfortable being a house dog quickly at her foster home, and is quiet and calm when left alone in the laundry room with another dog. She is good with dogs of all sizes, cats, and kids. She loves to run in the yard (fenced), loves to play, and recently discovered just how much fun toys are. Paisley is good with other large dogs and is absolutely in her element wrestling and running around with them. She would love a home with another active dog who can show her the ropes. Paisley seems to have been an outdoor dog before and many things are new to her….being in the house, walking on a leash, meeting people, etc. She needs a home with the patience and experience to continue her training and build her confidence in new situations. Name: Pearl

Description: Pearl is a middle aged female Beagle who is seeking a responsible new home, one that will take care of vet needs and love her forever. House trained, crate trained, good with other dogs and people, she's a lazier girl who loves slow walks she can sniff around on and hanging out at your feet, keeping you company. Pearl very much considers herself the neighborhood greeter on walks and loves to be out saying hello to everyone. She has always lived with another dog and enjoys their company. Pearl is an easy dog to live with and an even easier dog to lose your heart to. One of her most endearing traits is her love of being held and cuddled. She also loves her sleep, and can be a little grumpy when woken up quickly, so we say her name to wake her up and she wakes with a wagging tail. For this reason, she would do best in an adult or older child home.

Name: Phantom
Breed: German Shepherd/ Belgian Malinois Cross
Age: Young Adult
Gender: Male
Description: Phantom is a young Shepherd/ Malinois mix with a passion for learning. If you are looking for a dog you can teach a thousand tricks to, who will make you look like an amazing trainer, and who loves to learn and work, Phantom is your boy! He would absolutely excel in a dog sport or trick training and needs something similar to keep him busy. He already knows his basics and is eager to learn more. Typical to his breeds, if he is not kept mentally and physically active he finds his own fun and its never good so he is seeking an active home who wants a dog to do things with beyond the norm. He can be very mouthy and excitable but calms down with a confident handler who will not feed into and allow the over excitability. Phantom is excellent with other large breed dogs and loves to play. He would love a home with another high energy, like-minded companion to pal around and play with. He is not good with cats or small animals. Phantom has an off-switch when tired out and is quite the velcro boy. Cuddles are a runner up favorite to learning and playing. If you are an active home seeking a super smart dog to train and work with, Phantom would love to meet you!

Requirements: No cats. A strong commitment to daily physical and mental exercise. Adult/older child (12+) home.

Name: Pirate
Breed: Husky Malamute Cross
Age: Young Adult
Gender: Male
Description: Pirate is a one-eyed, fluffball of a husky/malamute mix with a true passion for life. This dog loves everything life has to offer…toys, treats, swimming, walks/runs, playing in the yard, other dogs, and then happily curling up on a fluffy dog bed to chill with his people. He is a high-energy dog, typical husky so needs an active home who will tire him out physically and mentally. He loves to learn tricks and commands when there are treats involved otherwise, typical husky, he’s hit or miss depending on what he wants to do. He’s stubborn, silly, and has a naughty streak a mile long that makes his foster family laugh. His cute face saves him from trouble every time though. Pirate is working on his housetraining, crates for the workday but needs a shove to get him in there, and is working on learning how to behave in a house. He is excellent with other dogs, needs a home without cats or small animals, and is best suited to a home with older, respectful kids who will take an active role in his training otherwise he tends to be too bossy and pushy with them. He does require a fenced yard due to his sight limitations. Pirate came into the pound with a dead eyeball caused by severe lens wasting that is likely the result of genetics. His other eye is losing vision though we are slowing the progression of vision loss with daily eyedrops.  There will be a point in the future where he becomes blind.  Now to us that sounds like a terrible fate but to Pirate it doesn't matter if things are getting blurrier and he isn't seeing as well.  He loves everything about life and everything it has to offer him.  He has a perpetual happy smile on his face.

Requirements: No cats. Fenced yard.

Name: Rex

Description: Rex is a young male Pit Bull/Shepherd mix who wears his heart on his sleeve. A sweet, gentle boy this guy hands out kisses and cuddles to everyone he comes across. He’s never once met a stranger, only his newest best friends. He sure has a lot going for him…housetrained, smart, knows basic obedience and a few tricks, minds his manners well in the house, and has incredible social skills. Rex is a social butterfly, happy to play with every dog he meets and greet every person. He is excellent with other dogs and loves to play with them. He’s active and playful without being hyper and is happy to relax on the couch after he gets a long walk and some playtime. Rex does have a downside…he has pretty severe separation anxiety. What that means in a home for Rex is that we are looking for someone who is home more often than not, willing to invest in a sturdy, reinforced crate for when they are gone, and someone who is willing to continue the training to minimize the anxiety when they leave. This is a tall order, we know, but Rex is extremely worth it. He has one of the kindest hearts we’ve ever come across in rescue. He is everyone’s best friend. Requirements: An adopter who is home home more often than not, willing to invest in an "indestructible" kennel, and will continue training for the separation anxiety.

Ria loves to learn and picks up training in a flash. She thrives on knowing what is expected of her and hearing that she is a "good girl". She is a young girl still at about 1-2 years old so she's got energy to burn but she works hard to remember her manners in the house. She is working on her housetraining and picking it up quickly. She crates for the workday though is an expert Houdini at escaping the typical wire/plastic crates so needs a reinforced crate. If she could pick her perfect home, it would have kids and another dog. Sandy is a runner though, so needs a fenced yard and/or someone who can walk her/tie her every single time she goes outside. If she is adopted to a home with no fence, we do want someone who walks daily. She's very well behaved in the house if she gets her hour or so of exercise, and is by far the best snuggle dog you will ever meet. She has never been with cats.

Requirements: Fenced yard. No cats

Name: Sassy
Breed: Mastiff/ Sheepdog Cross
Age: Adult
Gender: Female
Description: Sassy is an adult female Mastiff/Sheepdog type mix, looks like a Mastiff with a funny longer coat. Best described as a teddy bear, she is an easygoing dog who is good with dogs and people of all ages. She is about 75-80 pounds and makes the best of wherever she is at. Currently still at the shelter, she keeps her run clean which makes us suspect she has had some house training, and does not bark often. She walks nicely on the leash and has been friendly with dogs of all sizes there. She's sort of a lazy lady, likes walks but is far from high energy. The name Sassy seems to be a joke, she is more of a gentle and easygoing soul

Name: Scooby
Breed: Doxie Cross
Age: Puppy
Gender: Male
Description: Scooby is a short, long-bodied Doxie mix with ears to spare! This handsome goofy looking guy lures people in with his silly looks and then steals their heart with his sweet nature. He is a social, sensible puppy with a serious love of the kids and dogs, a healthy respect for the cat after being batted a time or two, and a outgoing, adventurous nature. He plays hard and cuddles even harder. He melts into your arms for some love. He is working on his housetraining and cratetraining. Scooby is a typical puppy so prepare for all the work of a puppy--puppy training classes, housetraining, cratetraining, socialization, things getting chewed up, accidents, and puppy mischief. Its balanced quite easily by the fun, snuggles, and play of such a well-started, sweet pup. Scooby is about 4 months old and 15 lbs right now. Parents are unknown so size is a guess but we suspect he'll be around 30 lbs as an adult.

Name: Stitch
Breed: Black Lab Cross
Age: Adult
Gender: Male
Description: Stitch is a young Black Lab mix with a passion for fetch!  He is smart and loves to learn...as long as you have a ball in your hand, Stitch will do anything for you. He is housetrained with a schedule, crates for the workday, knows what is appropriate to chew/what isn't, and minds his manners in the house well as long as he gets plenty of exercise. Stitch's biggest hurdle to adoption...he was run over by his owners as a puppy causing a broken hip that's been repaired with FHO surgery but also loss of bladder control. He can only hold his bladder about 4-5 hours max so needs a home with a doggy door, an outdoor setup, or a home willing and able to accommodate his potty needs. Stitch is excellent with other larger dogs, not good with kitties (he thinks they're fun to chase), and better with older kids who can take a role in his training. He would do best in a home who will show him firmly but lovingly that they are the boss otherwise he tries to test the limits a bit (typical teenager!). Stitch wants nothing more than to be loved. He loves to snuggle up on the couch, loves his people, and his favorite place after a nice long game of fetch is right by his foster mom's feet. He is a loving, smart, social Lab who has been waiting for a home for far too long.

Requirements: No cats. No young kids.

Name: Striker
Breed: Pit Bull
Age: Senior
Gender: Male
Description: Striker is a 9 year old male Pit Bull who came to rescue after spending 11 months in animal control, which says a lot about his character... not many dogs can maintain a friendly attitude and their sanity after that long in a kennel, but something about him persevered and during that, he charmed everyone he met. Now in a foster home, he is thriving. He loves blankets, lots of them, and is very mellow and relaxed in his crate but behaves himself equally well when left loose. Striker is house trained. His favorite toys are tennis balls, and he plays a mean game of fetch. He's about 60 lbs and is treat motivated which helps with training. He has not been around cats so would do best in a cat free home, and has done well with canine siblings at his foster home.

Requirements: Adopter must own home due to breed, no cats

Name: Suzie

Age: Adult

Description: Suzie is a middle aged female Doxie/beagle/? mix about 25 pounds and just a gem. Good with kids, dogs, and cats, she is always cheerful and loves to play. Her favorite thing are walks, and playing toys, and jumping on your lap to say hi. Suzie was previously an outside dog so is learning the house training and is crate trained for the workday. She would do best in a home with yard space and someone willing to walk daily. She makes us laugh and want to hug her a hundred times a day.

Name: Timber
Breed: German Shepherd
Age: Young Adult
Gender: Male
Description: Timber is a stunning German Shepherd with brains and brawn. This is one big boy! Timber is looking for a home who understands and enjoys shepherds because he is all shepherd in personality. He needs an active home who will tire him out physically and mentally otherwise he gets bored and finds his own games which, while he enjoys, we promise you likely won't. He is smart as a whip and learns things in a flash and would love a home where that brain is put to good use. Timber needs a home who will lovingly and firmly set boundaries and rules for him. When he has a confident handler and he knows what is expected of him, he toes the line perfectly but he's the kind of boy where if you give him an inch, he takes a mile. He is housetrained on a schedule, crates for the workday well though is vocal about it, and is working on learning his basic manners and how to be a good canine citizen. He is excellent with other large breed dogs. Timber would be best suited for an active home experienced with shepherds or other large breed working dogs. He has not been around cats that we know of but we suspect his prey drive to be too high to be a suitable match for kitties.

Requirements: No cats. Experienced home required.

Name: Tiny
Breed: Chocolate Lab Coss
Age: Adult

Description: Tiny is a 4-year-old chocolate Lab mix female, full grown at 45 pounds. House trained, crate trained, knows some commands and medium energy, she is a great ready made family dog. Tiny has always lived as an only dog, and does well with it. She interacts politely with other dogs out on walks, although she much prefers male dogs to other females, she can get bossy with female dogs. She is used to kids, loves to fetch and do car rides. Tiny is available to adopt August 19th and would thrive being a companion dog to someone wanting a mellower, trained dog.

Requirements: Prefers to be the only female dog in the home.

Name: Trixie
Breed: Shih Tzu/ Poodle
Age: Senior
Gender: Female
Description: Trixie, a senior Shih Tzu/Poodle, shows us what to expect, or rather what not to expect, from a little dog who has spent years without kindness and care. Turned in at age 13 by her owner, she came to the shelter with maggots and matted feces all over her fur, severe dental disease, ear infections that have caused some hearing loss, and a skittishness that comes from not enough loving touches. She so badly needs a chance to be loved by someone experienced with shy and elderly small dogs. House trained already, she also loves her crate and chooses to spend a lot of time safely napping in there. Depth perception is hard for her so she avoids big staircases. She ignores the other dogs and tries her hardest to just blend in. Her hearing is poor so she does startle if she doesn't know you are reaching for her and would thrive in a home where she is allowed her space while being encouraged to be loved. We know she doesn't have a lot of time left, so let's show her love for the time she does have.

Requirements: Experience with elderly dogs. Adult only home.

Name: Tuko (Adoption Pending!)
Breed: Black Lab
Age: Senior
Gender: Male
Description: Tuko is a 12 year old Lab who is seeking a retirement home. This grey faced guy will charm you with all he knows and his sweet nature. Great with other dogs, kids, and even used to live with cat, Tuko is a good natured dog. He loves walks still, likes to swim, likes to fetch and will bring you his food bowl when asked. Previously an outside dog, he was brought inside in the winter and trained to stay in the entry way, so imagine his world when he is invited to join a family. He's good off leash, knows obedience and several tricks, not a barker or a chewer. Tuko has had a lot of training time spent with him and it shows. He is trained to potty in the woods and not the yard, wait for the command Fetch before retrieving, and to walk nicely with you on the leash. Tuko needs a place before his owners leave on June 1st.

Name: Violet
Breed: Yellow Lab Cross
Age: Adult
Gender: Female
Description: Violet is a medium size adult female Yellow Lab cross, likely with Australian Shepherd based on her smaller size and softer face. This is what the expression looks like on a dog whose prior owners cared so little about her that they called animal control to come pick her up and bring her to the pound when she became pregnant, even though free spay was an option for them. Raised with kids and other dogs, she's a mild-mannered and gentle soul who is lower energy and quiet, loves to cuddle and be with you and has so much patience with other dogs. Her house training is coming along very well and she quietly crates for the workday. Violet has never been loved, nor cared for, yet she brings such a calm dignity with her that you can't help to love her. She is used to a house with yard space so would do better in a home with a yard, fenced or unfenced, than an apartment.
